No problem with the BitLock bike lock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2422\" alt=\"feature-urban-planet\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/national\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/feature-urban-planet.gif\" width=\"600\" height=\"63\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A new bike lock lets cyclists use their smartphones as keys.<\/p>\n<p>BitLock, a prototype from Mesh Motion Inc., uses a proximity sensor to detect its owner\u2019s presence, automatically unlocking when their smartphone is less than three feet away (it locks when its owner&#8217;s smartphone is more than three feet away).<\/p>\n<p>Users can also manually lock and unlock the device through BitLock\u2019s app, which includes GPS and route mapping as well. The app even tells riders how many C02 emissions were saved and how many calories were burned throughout the course of a trip.<\/p>\n<p>But perhaps more novel than those features is the device\u2019s potential to inspire guerrilla bike-sharing networks.<\/p>\n<p>Since it\u2019s possible to create multiple user profiles and groups on the lock\u2019s app, cyclists can share their ride with friends easily. An approved user can just open the BitLock app on their smartphone to find available bicycles in the area.<\/p>\n<p>The cut-resistant, waterproof steel lock\u2019s encryption, which is the same that online banking systems use, should put to rest any concerns of hacking.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, Mesh Motion Inc. is trying to fund the BitLock project through a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/126495570\/bitlock-turning-your-smart-phone-into-your-bike-ke\" target=\"_blank\">Kickstarter campaign<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Photo courtesy Mesh Motion Inc.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><i>Urban Planet is a roundup of blogs from around the world dealing specifically with urban environments.
