{"id":9391,"date":"2020-05-04T01:00:47","date_gmt":"2020-05-04T05:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/national\/?p=9391"},"modified":"2020-05-05T14:42:24","modified_gmt":"2020-05-05T18:42:24","slug":"book-review-canadian-modern-architecture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/national\/2020\/05\/04\/book-review-canadian-modern-architecture\/","title":{"rendered":"Book Review: Canadian Modern Architecture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Edited by Elsa Lam and Graham Livesey \u2013 Princeton Architectural Press (2019)<\/strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This anthology comprises the contributions of seventeen scholars representing successive generations of Canadian intellectuals in the field, ranging from academics to critics and to architects and, in many instances, individuals who are all three. By any standards, this is an encyclopedic tour de force documenting fifty years of Canadian architectural production across the expanses of what is still a sparsely populated continent. <\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kenneth Frampton, from the Foreword<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Throughout history, every generation of architects has had its respective history teachers from which to learn their profession. In ancient times there was Vitruvius, the Renaissance had Palladio, and prior to Modernism, there was the great French architect and theorist <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eug%C3%A8ne_Viollet-le-Duc\">Eugene Viollet-le-Duc<\/a>, who we lost a second time when his crossing-topping spire tragically succumbed to the flames of the fire at Notre Dame cathedral last year. Fortunately, he has many other surviving structures, but equally as important is the writing he has left to us, notably his <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikisource.org\/wiki\/Dictionnaire_raisonn%C3%A9_de_l%E2%80%99architecture_fran%C3%A7aise_du_XIe_au_XVIe_si%C3%A8cle\"><em>Dictionnaire Raisonne<\/em><\/a>, (1854) which along with John Ruskin\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Seven_Lamps_of_Architecture\"><em>Seven Lamps of Architecture<\/em><\/a> (1880) would become the swan song of nineteenth-century Rationalism and Romanticism.<\/p>\n<p>For the twentieth century indisputably belongs to Modernism, during which time the architecture historians were also the architects themselves &#8211; Le Corbusier\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toward_an_Architecture\">Towards an Architecture<\/a> <\/em>(1927) and Frank Lloyd Wright\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/3197292-the-future-of-architecture\"><em>The Future of Architecture<\/em><\/a> (1953) being notable examples. The Postmodern age also gave us several treatises that have become part of every architect\u2019s education, starting with Robert Venturi\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Complexity-Contradiction-Architecture-Robert-Venturi\/dp\/0870702823\"><em>Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture <\/em><\/a>(1966) and running up to Rem Koolhaas\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Delirious_New_York\"><em>Delirious New York <\/em><\/a>(1994).<\/p>\n<p>And during this time of Covid-19 uncertainty, we need our architecture historians more than ever, not just to document the recent past and present, but to comment on the here-and-now, what will become known as the \u2018Age of Covid.\u2019 As such, figures like <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kenneth_Frampton\">Kenneth Frampton<\/a> shine brightly in the pandemic fog, providing us with the assurance that the home fires are still burning, that the architecture flag is still flying, and that yet another generation will be able to learn their history lessons lest they repeat it. His <a href=\"https:\/\/thamesandhudsonusa.com\/books\/modern-architecture-a-critical-history-softcover-fourth-edition\"><em>Modern Architecture: A Critical History <\/em><\/a>(1980) was required reading in architecture history at UBC in the late 1990s, and would\u2019ve been responsible for educating an entire generation of architects here on the west coast.<\/p>\n<p>And while south of the border, where several generations of architects have had the benefit of learning from such historians as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sigfried_Giedion\">Siegfried Giedeon<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reyner_Banham\">Reyner Banham<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lewis_Mumford\">Lewis Mumford<\/a>, in Canada there remains a disappointingly thin selection of architecture texts to teach our architects, as recently noted in Trevor Boddy\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadianarchitect.com\/book-review-canadian-modern-architecture-1967-to-the-present\/\"><em>Canadian Architect <\/em>review<\/a> of this new book. While several have noted Harold Kalman\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Concise-History-Canadian-Architecture\/dp\/0195407008\/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&amp;keywords=A+concise+history+of+canadian+architecture&amp;qid=1587845315&amp;s=books&amp;sr=1-1\"><em>A Concise History of Canadian Architecture<\/em> <\/a>(2000) as the point of departure for this new book edited by Elsa Lam and Graham Livesey, there have been along the way some notable exceptions, including Andrew Gruft\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadianarchitect.com\/substance-over-spectacle-contemporary-canadian-architecture\/\"><em>Substance Over Spectacle <\/em><\/a>(2004), which attempted to give a snapshot of its time featuring work from across the country.<\/p>\n<p>In particular, Gruft\u2019s list of contributors to the book featured two essays written by Sherry McKay and Marco Polo, who also appear here in Elsa and Graham\u2019s new book. In my reading of this new history, the optimism of their essays from over fifteen years ago reflects the continued spirit of regional resilience and collaboration that characterizes much of <em>Canadian Modern Architecture<\/em>. Elsa and Graham also would\u2019ve witnessed this first hand during their nation-wide book launch, with events in cities from Vancouver to Halifax. Sadly, our current reality has cut the book launches short, so I was fortunate to have been able to go to the one in Vancouver, held at the main branch of the Vancouver Public Library in late 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Of the many things discussed at the Vancouver book launch, which featured a panel discussion between Elsa, John Patkau, James Cheng, and Sherry McKay, was the decision to choose the particular timeframe for the book &#8211; from 1967 to the present. It was observed that while the first two decades after Montreal\u2019s Expo \u201967 provided the nation\u2019s most heroic architecture moments, the decades that followed them have only had a few architectural high notes. Why this has been the case became the theme of the Vancouver book launch \u2013 it would be good to hear if the panel discussions in the other cities noted the same, perhaps something that could be the subject of a future essay in <em>Canadian Architect<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>For as has been noted in several other reviews of the book,<em> Canadian Modern Architecture<\/em> is the benefactor of many things\u2014also noted in Frampton\u2019s introduction\u2014having as it does three past editors of our national magazine, along with its current editor. The remaining essayists consist of many past contributors to the magazine from over the years, as well as several noted architectural educators from across the country.<\/p>\n<p>The result is not unlike Frampton\u2019s <em>Modern Architecture<\/em>, with each chapter issue-based more than about any particular style or region. It makes for an interesting depiction of the nation\u2019s built history, putting it above and beyond the simple need to function as a reference book. By deciding to be non-chronological, one can more readily see the thread connecting such architecture as Safdie\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Habitat_67\">Habitat 67<\/a> and Erickson and Massey\u2019s SFU campus atop Mount Burnaby, despite their geographical distance from each other.<\/p>\n<p>Consisting of fifteen essays, and pivoting around many great national moments starting with the aforementioned Expo \u201967, the book begins with a discussion about the importance of the Centennial projects. Written by Marco Polo and Colin Ripley, their essay looks at such projects as the National Arts Centre, followed by a section devoted to the pavilions of Expo \u201967 itself. Following this, George Thomas Kapelos\u2019 chapter looks at many recent projects in Ottawa, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Gallery_of_Canada\">National Gallery Museum<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canadian_War_Museum\">Canadian War Museum<\/a>, alongside the new <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canadian_Museum_for_Human_Rights\">Museum for Human Rights<\/a> in Winnipeg. The remainder of his essay looks at the architecture of civic centres, city halls, and airports across the country, and closing with a discussion of the legacy and differences between the Olympic Games held in Montreal and Vancouver.<\/p>\n<p>The next section in the book, specifically on campus architecture, provides for Lisa Landrum\u2019s essay to cover the entirety of the nation, from Erickson and Massey\u2019s SFU in Burnaby to Ron Thom\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trent_University\">Trent University<\/a>, buildings that set the bar high for campus architecture in the years to follow. Several notable ones are as well featured here, starting with Richard Henriquez\u2019s addition at Trent in 1991 and bringing us to the present-day with Snohetta and Zeidler\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snohetta.com\/project\/250-ryerson-university-student-learning-centre\">recent addition to the Ryerson campus<\/a> in Toronto.<\/p>\n<p>The book\u2019s first quarter, entitled \u2018<em>National Movements<\/em>\u2019, appropriately ends with a chapter devoted to First Nations architecture, penned by Odile Henault, and featuring such projects as the <a href=\"https:\/\/thinkratio.com\/project\/squamish-lilwat-cultural-centre\/\">Squamish Lil\u2019wat Centre<\/a> in Whistler, along with the <a href=\"https:\/\/nkmipdesert.com\/\">Nk\u2019Mip Visitor Centre<\/a> in Osoyoos. Her contribution provides the book\u2019s tone of optimism, that Canada as a nation can heal and learn through Truth and Reconciliation, and sets the bar high for the chapters to follow, with the next three sections of the book entitled \u2018<em>International Influences<\/em>,\u2019 \u2018<em>Regional Responses<\/em>,\u2019 and \u2018<em>Centers of Influence<\/em>.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>When I asked Elsa what motivated her and Graham most to write the book, she had the following to say:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Graham Livesey and I undertook this project because there wasn\u2019t really a good volume covering this important period in Canadian architecture. We thought of it initially as a resource for teaching Canadian architectural history, but soon expanded our ambition, with the idea that it would be valuable for the larger architectural community in Canada. Histories help us to get a sense of where we\u2019ve come from, and how what we\u2019re doing fits in with a bigger picture.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>She also commented on the importance of the book launches:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>The launch events became a project in themselves \u2013 we did over a dozen events across Canada, and they\u2019ve spurred really interesting conversations about the character and future of Canadian architecture. Based on the positive and thoughtful feedback we\u2019ve received from architects, architecture professors, and students, we feel that we\u2019ve accomplished what we set out to do.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As such, <em>Canadian Modern Architecture<\/em> is set to become the new go-to text of our country\u2019s recent architectural achievements and a much-appreciated narrative with which to educate the upcoming generation of architects.
