A\u00a0final project for students in the course &#8220;Thinking Machines: Public space as a vehicle for challenging production and process in art making with technology&#8221;, in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Ottawa, the works &#8220;explore knowledge and process in the production of art with technological tools&#8221; within the context of public space, and &#8220;the world outside the gallery&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-12990\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/ottawa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/04\/ART3944-Map-600x341.jpg\" alt=\"ART3944-Map\" width=\"523\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/ottawa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/04\/ART3944-Map-600x341.jpg 600w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/ottawa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/04\/ART3944-Map-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/ottawa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/04\/ART3944-Map.jpg 637w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 523px) 100vw, 523px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Minimal in their presence, and subtle in their application, the installations question technology, art, and public space through various\u00a0means.These include, &#8220;a\u00a0shadow play attachment for street lights&#8221; (Tess Ruel),\u00a0a &#8220;useless industrial looking box that references\u00a0ubiquitous\u00a0utility boxes of all kinds&#8221; (Anna Eyler), a\u00a0&#8220;gridded\u00a0sculpture\u00a0developed through anonymous communication online and installed in the park daily&#8221; (Rad), and &#8220;a simple metal tube curved and installed at a picnic table, [where] when two cell phones call each other&#8230; an eerie and melancholic instrument is created&#8221;.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13003\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13003\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13003 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/ottawa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/04\/IMG_8425-600x450.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Ryan Stec\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/ottawa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/04\/IMG_8425-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/ottawa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/04\/IMG_8425-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/ottawa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/04\/IMG_8425-940x705.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13003\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: Ryan Stec<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The course, which is taught by Carleton doctoral student Ryan Stec, is meant to encourage students to think about the technology of the city in a playful and artistic way \u2013 leading to the development of non-destructive, urban interruptions or additions, as a way of appropriating the landscape of the technological city. The motor is protected in the box, but it is not protected from the world. It is what makes the piece, but it will eventually stop and die. Seems familiar perhaps?<\/p>\n<p>Anna Eyler:\u00a0The Last Fortress of Metaphysics<br \/>\nLocation: Jack Purcell Park<br \/>\nDrawing attention to the ubiquity of electronic indicators within the urban environment. The artwork will literally and figuratively bring to light our use of these trash cans and hopefully add to the discussion of our city&#8217;s production and displacement of waste.<\/p>\n<div>Renaud Delaquis: City Feedback<br \/>\n<span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">Location: Minto Park<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">This interactive piece amplifies the sounds of the city through a pointless phone call. The calls will be recorded and looped over and over on top of itself, giving the caller its own performance, unique to them, but with people being able to listen in on the loop and the callers, spies in the arts building. Will the city speak to us? A phone number connected to a loop pedal that will accumulate and layer lengths of telephone calls for whoever calls.<\/p>\n<p>Tess Ruel: An elegy for the city night<br \/>\nLocation: Jack Purcell Park<br \/>\nDrawing on the history of magic\u00a0lanterns\u00a0and early moving images this work intervenes into the overflow of\u00a0light in the city to suggest a return to shadows in the night.<\/p>\n<p>Rad:\u00a0Art Directions<br \/>\nLocation: Minto Park<br \/>\nArt Directions is a piece that is objectively using one of the most revolutionary inventions that has hit humanity. The INTERNET.
