The cycle lane features two small cement islands at the top and bottom of the street with a ladder pattern of yellow paint running between them.<\/p>\n<p>While such a feature was new to me, Kathryn Hunt of the <a href=\"http:\/\/theincidentalcyclist.blogspot.com\">Incidental Cyclist<\/a> blog pointed out that a similar contraflow lane has operated in Old Ottawa South for several years, <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.ca\/maps?q=Bank+and+Cameron+ottawa&amp;oe=utf-8&amp;client=firefox-a&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;hq=&amp;hnear=Rue+Bank+%26+Cameron+Ave,+Ottawa,+Ottawa+Division,+Ontario&amp;gl=ca&amp;ei=d2NlTNn2NoT7lwf56uiSDg&amp;ved=0CBYQ8gEwAA&amp;ll=45.391317,-75.680965&amp;spn=0.000942,0.001915&amp;z=19&amp;layer=c&amp;cbll=45.391361,-75.680819&amp;panoid=CirrvD3KyMsd1pP9PgkUFg&amp;cbp=12,251.67,,0,23.53\">beginning at the corner of Bank and Cameron<\/a> and running west toward Carleton U.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Whether running against the flow of car traffic, or parallel to it, the islands at either end of such a construction appear to be an attempt at &#8220;grade separation&#8221;; the physical separation of cycle lanes from encroachment\/interference by auto traffic.<\/p>\n<p>They are not a continuous barrier though, and that&#8217;s what would make for true grade separation according to Michael Powell, Chair of the City &#8216;s Roads and Cycling Advisory Committee, who sent along some images from a consultation the City held earlier this year.\u00a0 The laddered paint of the Hintonburg example might be a good indication of what the pilot project of the Centertown East-West Bike Lane will look like if it is placed on a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/spacing\/4888059329\/\">residential street<\/a> instead of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/spacing\/4887922717\/in\/photostream\/\">commercial thoroughfare<\/a> like Somerset or Gladstone.
