The iconic homes, mainly built between 1910 and 1940, offered an accessible first home to many urban families. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wbez.org\/episode-segments\/look-centurys-chicago-bungalow\" target=\"_self\">WBEZ<\/a> takes a look at the history of the bungalow and considers what type of housing might qualify as its 21st century counterpart.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alternet.org\/story\/149308\/vision%3A_the_5_smartest_policies_enacted_by_american_cities_in_2010?page=1\" target=\"_self\">Alternet<\/a> salutes the top 5 smartest policies enacted by American cities in 2010: Denver Public Schools&#8217; Spanish-language radio show, Pittsburgh\/Allegheny County&#8217;s new development wage law, New York City&#8217;s juvenile justice reforms, Austin&#8217;s transportation bond which targets complete streets and Cleveland&#8217;s lawsuit against sub-prime mortgage lenders.<br \/>\n<!--more--> <img decoding=\"async\" title=\"More...\" src=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-includes\/js\/tinymce\/plugins\/wordpress\/img\/trans.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\n\u2022 &#8220;Statistics have to evolve. You have to make them relevant,&#8221; says Notre Dame economist David Betson. That&#8217;s the idea behind the US Census Bureau&#8217;s new suite of proposed poverty measurements, alternatives to the current metric &#8211; a relic of the 1960s. According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2011\/01\/04\/AR2011010404431.html?wprss=rss_nation\" target=\"_self\">Washington Post<\/a>, in 2009, the current measure classified 14.3 percent of Americans as impoverished; under the alternatives, it could have been as low as 12.8 percent or as high as 17.1 percent.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Passengers on NJ Transit now have the option ride in relative silence between Trenton and Manhattan. But as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/01\/10\/nyregion\/10quiet.html?em\" target=\"_self\">New York Times<\/a> reports, keeping the quiet car quiet is easier said than done.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Map mavens take note: the <a href=\"http:\/\/projects.nytimes.com\/census\/2010\/explorer\" target=\"_self\">New York Times<\/a> now offers block level mapping of the Census Bureau&#8217;s American Community Survey, 2005-2009.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Andres Duany, the father of New Urbanism, reflects on the trials and tribulations of public participation in planning and the tension between seeking input and getting things done in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.architectmagazine.com\/planning\/control-the-masses-andres-duany.aspx\" target=\"_self\">Architect Magazine<\/a>. &#8220;Conventional public participation makes the mistake of privileging the neighbors, the people who live within a half-mile of the given proposal&#8230;You can\u2019t confuse neighbors with the community as a whole.&#8221;<br \/>\n<em><br \/>\nPhoto by<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/boiker\/3148940879\/sizes\/m\/in\/pool-652316@N25\/\" target=\"_self\">Ed.
