Cette comparaison entre une photo d\u2019archives et une photo plus actuelle est la premi\u00e8re d\u2019une s\u00e9rie o\u00f9 l\u2019on tentera de mettre en contraste certains \u00e9l\u00e9ments qui composaient Ottawa au d\u00e9but du si\u00e8cle dernier avec ce qu\u2019ils sont devenus (ou disparus) au fils des ans.<\/p>\n

Il n\u2019y a de doute que certaines d\u00e9cisions furent les bonnes. Par contre que ce soit par le prestigieux boulevard King Edouard, maintenant transform\u00e9 en autoroute \u00e0 8 voies ou les plaines Lebreton laiss\u00e9es en friche durant une quarantaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es, on se rend compte que parfois la trame urbaine a \u00e9t\u00e9 rudement mise \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9preuve. Avec du recul on se rend compte que dans certains cas, ces modifications, qui transcendaient le progr\u00e8s \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque, ont \u00e9t\u00e9 fait pour le pire.<\/p>\n

Pour cette premi\u00e8re comparaison, nous avons choisi la rue Sparks.\u00a0 Jadis le c\u0153ur du centre-ville avec ses th\u00e9\u00e2tres, boutiques de luxe et meilleures tables d\u2019Ottawa, Sparks a lentement sign\u00e9 son arr\u00eat de mort lorsque ses h\u00f4tels, restaurants et habitations ont \u00e9t\u00e9 remplac\u00e9s par des espaces \u00e0 bureau, principalement occup\u00e9es par le gouvernement f\u00e9d\u00e9ral.<\/p>\n

Difficilement reconnaissable, le seul b\u00e2timent identifiable de cette \u00e9poque est celui qui abrite le Pub D\u2019Arcy Mcgee\u2019s.\u00a0\u00c0 noter que l\u2019h\u00f4tel Russel qui se trouve \u00e0 l\u2019intersection Elgin et Sparks\u00a0 a \u00e9t\u00e9 incendi\u00e9 en 1933 pour \u00eatre en suite d\u00e9moli quelques ann\u00e9es plus tard pour faire place \u00e0 la version que l\u2019on connait d\u2019Elgin et du Monument comm\u00e9moratif de guerre du Canada.<\/p>\n

This Sparks Street comparison is the first of a series of photographs entitled: Ottawa: \u201cNow and Then\u201d.\u00a0 The series is meant to emphasize some of the changes the city of Ottawa has gone through over the years. In some cases, elements of the streetscape have changed drastically or are simply not there anymore.<\/p>\n

It is clear that some changes have made Ottawa better.\u00a0 However, the transformation of the prestigious King Edward Boulevard into and 8-lane highway or the underdevelopment of Lebreton Flats for almost half a century are examples where transformations for the sake of progress have had questionable outcomes.<\/p>\n

For this first comparison, we\u2019ve chosen Sparks Street.\u00a0 80 years ago, Sparks street was not only lively, it was also the core of downtown Ottawa surrounded by hotels, theatres and caf\u00e9s.\u00a0 Over time, Sparks Street slowly decayed, with its restaurants and dwellings replaced by offices, mostly government spaces.<\/p>\n

It is hard to believe both pictures above were taken at the same spot.\u00a0 The only recognizable building is the one which now houses D\u2019Arcy McGee\u2019s Pub. The building on the end of Sparks Street seen in the old picture was the Russell Hotel, which was destroyed by a fire in 1933.\u00a0 The National War Memorial is now where the Russell Hotel used to be.<\/p>\n
