That the final proposal will likely result in the loss of a  heritage building shows how extended community consultation must be  accompanied with a <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2011\/11\/28\/price-points-report-from-the-development-wars\/\">willingness to compromise<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Christine McLaren, resident blogger with the BMW Guggenheim Lab,  tells the story of a trip to the first post-war planned suburb of <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2011\/11\/28\/retrofitting-levittown\/\">Levittown<\/a>, New York and subsequent interactions with leading authors with ideas of how to retrofit it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><em> <\/em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"sm\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/media\/identity\/sidebar-head-montreal.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"44\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This week&#8217;s installment of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/2011\/11\/27\/the-sunday-building-project-now-with-anecdotes\/\">The Sunday Building Project<\/a> <\/em>comes  complete with anecdotes about the first substantial snowfall in  Montreal this year and how winter serves as a test of the true passion  of Montrealers.<\/p>\n<p>Guillaume St-Jean uses the <em>Montage du Jour <\/em>feature to look <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/2011\/11\/25\/montage-du-jour-intersection-des-rues-sainte-catherine-ouest-et-guy\/\">back in history<\/a> at the changing face of the intersection of Rue Saint-Catherine Ouest and Rue Guy.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"st\" src=\"..\/media\/identity\/sidebar-head-toronto.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"44\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As part of the ongoing <em>Fourth Wall<\/em> series looking at ways to  break the barriers of citizen engagement at City Hall, Hillary Best  takes a look at ways to help facilitate <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2011\/12\/02\/fourth-wall-the-impact-of-citizens-associations-on-the-culture-of-civic-engagement\/\">community association<\/a> organizations and also examines the idea of <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2011\/11\/29\/fourth-wall-participatory-budgeting\/\">participatory budgeting<\/a> and its international best practices.<\/p>\n<p>Continuing the discussion from the food theme in the latest issue of <em>Spacing Magazine, <\/em>Allie Hunwicks launches a series that will look at <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2011\/11\/30\/food-recipes-for-community-hubs-pt-1\/\">cafes and restaurants<\/a> around the city that are expanding on their role to become community spaces.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"so\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/media\/identity\/sidebar-head-ottawa.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"44\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>As  part of the Lansdowne Park redevelopment planners are predicting a   2-3% cycling modal share for sporting events. In his first post for   Spacing, <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/ottawa\/2011\/12\/01\/the-cycling-lansdowne-situation-in-short\/\">Alex Devries <\/a>examines the issues with this prediction and suggests the infrastructure that will be needed to meet this ambitious goal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Jay Baltz looks at the fascinating story of two downtown Ottawa<a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/ottawa\/2011\/11\/28\/space-for-schools-why-were-planners-oblivious-to-inner-city-growth\/\"> schools <\/a>that   were slated for closure as recently as 2004 but are now desperately   searching for expansion plans.
