The story includes links to the winning designs.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the ongoing <em>Video Vancouver <\/em>series Caroline Toth features an incredible video by Rob Whitworth of the captivating <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/vancouver\/2011\/12\/15\/traffic-in-frenetic-hcmc-vietnam\/\">flows of traffic<\/a> in Vietnam&#8217;s emerging metropolis of Ho Chi Minh City.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"sm\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/media\/identity\/sidebar-head-montreal.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"44\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Gregory McCormick&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/2011\/12\/06\/montreal-lit-returning\/\"><em>Montreal Lit<\/em><\/a> feature returned this week featuring excerpts from author Dany Laferri\u00e8re reflecting on the Point St-Charles neighbourhood and the experiences of a newcomer.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Regionalist <\/em>Joel Thibert explores the question of whether regionalism, rooted in the systems that surround us, and cosmopolitanism, concerning itself with the broader human community, are really fundamentally at<a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/2011\/12\/05\/the-regionalist-are-cosmopolitanism-and-regionalism-fundamentally-at-odds\/\"> odds with each other<\/a>. In doing so Thibert looks back to the origins of both ideas and their respective strengths and shortcomings.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/spacingmedia.com\/media\/identity\/sidebar-head-toronto.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"44\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hilary Best continued the discussion on breaking barriers to citizen engagement through <em>The Fourth Wall <\/em>series this week. The series looked at the increasing <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2011\/12\/06\/fourth-wall-the-changing-geography-of-local-political-representation\/\">size of local government<\/a>, analyzing the history of Toronto&#8217;s amalgamations and comparing councillor to constituent ratios around the world. The series also began a look at the<a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2011\/12\/16\/fourth-wall-our-elections-back-to-basics\/\"> election process <\/a>by suggesting ways improve outreach to run for office.<\/p>\n<p>Concerned about the way that cities are often neglected or portrayed darkly in <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2011\/12\/15\/gift-guide-great-childrens-books-that-feature-cities\/\">children&#8217;s books<\/a>, Todd Harrison presents a selection from his family library of books for children that celebrate and take place in cities, just in time for Christmas.<\/p>\n<div><!--more--><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"so\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/media\/identity\/sidebar-head-ottawa.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"44\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Eric Darwin used two posts in the <em>Walk Space <\/em>feature this week to give a &#8220;biased, slanted and opinionated&#8221; overview of Ottawa&#8217;s <em>Downtown Moves<\/em> initiative to improve downtown connections and prepare for the upcoming underground LRT. <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/ottawa\/?p=7401\">The first post <\/a>focuses on connections to the west end as well as what to do about key streets including the Sparks Street pedestrian mall.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/ottawa\/?p=7419\">the second part<\/a> of his post on the <em>Downtown Moves<\/em> initiative Eric Darwin focuses on pedestrian experience and how to avoid and correct the deadening effects of certain buildings that ignore the street.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><em>Photograph by: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/lytfyre\/\">lytfyre<br \/>\n<\/a><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Spacing Saturday highlights posts from across Spacing\u2019s blog network in Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, and the Atlantic region.
