Citizens have expressed concern about safety, environmentalists welcome a darker night sky and others are exploring solar or concentrated lighting systems to reduce costs and focus the illumination where it is needed. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/01\/08\/opinion\/sunday\/as-streetlights-vanish-a-return-to-a-darker-age.html?_r=2&amp;scp=1&amp;sq=Return%20to%20a%20Darker%20Age&amp;st=cse\">NYTimes<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0A photographer in London, a city famous for 24-hour hustle and bustle, captured what happens when the streets are empty on \u00a0Christmas morning. (<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.flickr.net\/en\/2012\/01\/06\/london-empty\/\">Flickr<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Forget the metropolis. The new unit of urbanity ought to be the megapolitan area, argue Arthur Nelson and Robert Lang, authors of the new book\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.planning.org\/apastore\/meet\/2011\/megapolitan.htm\">Megapolitan America<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>By 2040, they forsee a United States carved up into 23 &#8220;megapolitan&#8221; areas &#8211; \u00a0large regions of interconnected metropolitan areas. While issues such as housing and education will be controlled at a smaller scale, the authors argue that the megapolitan area will be the unit of choice for\u00a0transportation, economic development, and environmental planning. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlanticcities.com\/jobs-and-economy\/2012\/01\/emerging-and-interconnected-megapolitan-regions\/847\/\">The Atlantic Cities<\/a>)<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"More...\" src=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-includes\/js\/tinymce\/plugins\/wordpress\/img\/trans.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0What&#8217;s in a name? When it comes to a neighbourhood, a lot.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlanticcities.com\/neighborhoods\/2012\/01\/awkward-art-neighborhood-naming\/843\/\">The Atlantic Cities<\/a>\u00a0explores efforts in cities such as Indianapolis to enhance civic identity by creating or resurrecting neighbourhood names. While the practice can improve a sense of belonging, it can also fuel bitter divides and even facilitate gentrification. To counter the practice of real estate neighbourhood toponymy (ie. Nolita, SoBro), New York State assemblyman\u00a0Hakeem Jeffries\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com\/2011\/04\/19\/sobro-and-procro-nojoke-to-assemblyman\/\">introduced legislation<\/a>\u00a0to ban realtors from inventing neighborhood names.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0Dave Gardetta at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lamag.com\/features\/Story.aspx?ID=1568281\">Los Angeles Magazine<\/a>\u00a0has a must read article on parking in Los Angeles and the work of guru Donald Shoup.\u00a0\u201cI truly believe that when men and women think about parking, their mental capacity reverts to the reptilian cortex of the brain&#8230;Our mental capacities just bottom out when we talk about parking,\u201d says Shoup. The article explores the history of parking practices in L.A. and the evolution of parking planning from &#8220;a number you looked up in a book&#8221; to million dollar wireless meter systems.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0But if you&#8217;ve got it, flaunt it. Michael Kimmelman at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/01\/08\/arts\/design\/taking-parking-lots-seriously-as-public-spaces.html?pagewanted=1&amp;_r=1&amp;hpw\">NYTimes<\/a>\u00a0explores opportunities to enhance the urbanity of parking lots and encourage their use as meaningful public spaces.
