{"id":1067,"date":"2006-08-09T21:34:10","date_gmt":"2006-08-10T01:34:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingtoronto.ca\/?p=1067"},"modified":"2013-01-21T14:54:42","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T19:54:42","slug":"bike-theft-under-police-noses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2006\/08\/09\/bike-theft-under-police-noses\/","title":{"rendered":"Bike Theft Under Police Noses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <em>Star<\/em> reporter wrote a story today describing how her bike was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/NASApp\/cs\/ContentServer?pagename=thestar\/Layout\/Article_Type1&#038;call_pageid=971358637177&#038;c=Article&#038;cid=1155073815403\">stolen from in front of police headquarters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a perfect symbol of how little police in this city care about bike theft, whose ubiquity is probably one of the significant deterrents to cycling in this city.<\/p>\n<p>I suspect that, with even a modest dedicated program, the police could significantly reduce theft in the city, by cracking down on the ways stolen bikes are re-sold. Most of them probably go through a small number of bike shops. Shut down these shops with a few sting operations, and make sure the other shops in the city know the police are watching them, and it would become significantly harder to unload a stolen bike &#8212; cutting down on the casual theft that plagues the city. You could never get rid of bike theft completely, of course, especially for high-end bikes, but I suspect bike theft rates could be significantly reduced if the police put some real effort into it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Star reporter wrote a story today describing how her bike was stolen from in front of police headquarters.
