{"id":1110,"date":"2006-08-29T22:29:34","date_gmt":"2006-08-30T02:29:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingtoronto.ca\/?p=1110"},"modified":"2013-01-21T14:12:23","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T19:12:23","slug":"croft-street-reborn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2006\/08\/29\/croft-street-reborn\/","title":{"rendered":"Croft Street Reborn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/images\/thestar\/img\/060829_yeung_art_300.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A year ago, I went on a walking tour of the Harbord Village area that ended at <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.ca\/maps?f=q&#038;hl=en&#038;q=Croft+St.+and+College+St.,+Toronto&#038;ie=UTF8&#038;z=17&#038;ll=43.657161,-79.405478&#038;spn=0.003493,0.010815&#038;t=h&#038;om=1\">Croft Street<\/a>, an utterly charming, unconventional laneway that was in the midst of being revitalized by its residents.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/NASApp\/cs\/ContentServer?pagename=thestar\/Layout\/Article_Type1&#038;call_pageid=971358637177&#038;c=Article&#038;cid=1156801811524\">The Star reports<\/a> that the final part of the transformation is being completed &#8212; the painting of murals over much of the blank wall space, covering up the graffiti that previously existed. Many people will recognize in the photo, however, that much of the new art is itself by well-known graffiti artists. In effect, sanctioned, attractive graffiti art is\u00a0 replacing unsanctioned, random tagging.<\/p>\n<p>There are other ingenious aspects to the laneway&#8217;s revitalization, including the marking of &#8220;gutters&#8221; along the side to make it more welcoming to walk along, so it is well worth a visit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A year ago, I went on a walking tour of the Harbord Village area that ended at Croft Street, an utterly charming, unconventional laneway that was in the midst of being revitalized by its residents.
