{"id":1243,"date":"2006-10-13T12:44:59","date_gmt":"2006-10-13T16:44:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingtoronto.ca\/?p=1243"},"modified":"2013-01-21T12:55:24","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T17:55:24","slug":"eucan-megabins-to-be-removed-in-north-york","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2006\/10\/13\/eucan-megabins-to-be-removed-in-north-york\/","title":{"rendered":"EUCAN megabins to be removed in North York"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"475\" height=\"155\" src=\"http:\/\/megabin.ca\/galler2.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some good news from North York: a number of the Megabins will be replaced with smaller sized receptacles. <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/index.php?s=eucan\">EUCAN&#8217;s monster garbage bin<\/a> pilot project was rejected by city council in May 2006.<\/p>\n<p>From the community newspaper the <em>Town Crier<\/em> [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.towncrieronline.ca\/main\/main.php?direction=viewstory&#038;storyid=5785\">entire article<\/a>]:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>After discussions with the city, Eucan, the manufacturer of the seven-foot garbage Megabins, has agreed to put smaller-sized garbage bins back into production in order to replace the giant-sized receptacles.<\/p>\n<p>But it could take months to manufacture them, said Rob Orpin, director of collections at the city&#8217;s solid waste management services.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They are going to be replaced,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It&#8217;s just (that) a time frame of when they&#8217;re going to be replaced (is unknown). We&#8217;re waiting for that answer ourselves.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The push to replace the Megabins with smaller ones came after several city councillors, including North York councillor Mike Feldman. voiced their displeasure with the bin and asked for them to be removed. The Megabin made their way onto local streets in Spring 2005 as a pilot project.<\/p>\n<p>At first, Rolando Garcia, Eucan CEO, said there were no more of the smaller-sized bins available after they had been redistributed around the city. But a clause in their contract with the city ob-ligating them to replace the Megabins at councillors&#8217; request convinced them to put more regular-sized bins into production.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some good news from North York: a number of the Megabins will be replaced with smaller sized receptacles.
