{"id":1260,"date":"2006-10-18T14:18:51","date_gmt":"2006-10-18T18:18:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingtoronto.ca\/?p=1260"},"modified":"2006-10-18T15:00:49","modified_gmt":"2006-10-18T19:00:49","slug":"toronto-the-book","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2006\/10\/18\/toronto-the-book\/","title":{"rendered":"Toronto (The Book)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/images\/rcharris.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"right\" src=\"http:\/\/www.douglas-mcintyre.com\/images\/books\/covers\/cover_1056.jpg\" \/>Thursday (Oct 19) is a busy night with two separate discussions going on, one about <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/?p=1255\">tall buildings<\/a> and the other about the <a href=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/votes\/?p=169\">Queen West Triangle<\/a> &#8212; but if you&#8217;re in the mood for something more contemplative, head over to Ballenford Books (600 Markham, across from Honest Eds) between 6-9pm for the launch of <em>Toronto<\/em>, a new book of photography by Geoffrey James.<\/p>\n<p><em>Geoffrey James has stalked the parks and back streets of Canada&#8217;s largest metropolis with his tripod and wide-angle panoramic camera, in search of the city&#8217;s essence. Eschewing the obvious landmarks, he shows us pavilions on the lakeshore, billboards in Dundas Square, back lots in Kensington Market and many other exceptional views. His images are accompanied by a 4,000 word introduction from Mark Kingwell and extensive endnotes from city historians and other experts. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Endnote authors include <em>Spacing Magazine<\/em> Associate Editor Shawn Micallef, as well as Ken Greenberg, Pleasance Crawford, Michael McClelland, Rosemary Donegan, John Sewell, Greg Gatenby and others.<\/p>\n<p>Toronto may not be the most beautiful city in conventional terms, but we have some of the most popular photobloggers in the world here &#8212; and James&#8217; view of the city, along with the notes by a disparate group of Torontonians, gets at why this is indeed No Mean City.<\/p>\n<p><em>The accompanying exhibition features large black and white prints by Geoffrey James from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metiviergallery.com\/james_toronto.html\">Nicholas Metivier Gallery<\/a>, along with favourite images from other photographers whose interests and views of the city often parallel those of Geoffrey&#8217;s from the book.
