{"id":127,"date":"2005-08-16T16:42:46","date_gmt":"2005-08-16T20:42:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingtoronto.ca\/?p=127"},"modified":"2013-01-21T12:57:29","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T17:57:29","slug":"ad-share","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2005\/08\/16\/ad-share\/","title":{"rendered":"Ad share"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.velov.grandlyon.com\/_Images\/CommentCaMarche\/visuel_prendre_velo.gif\" alt=\"velo v\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <a target=blank href=\"http:\/\/www.politics.guardian.co.uk\/france\/story\/0,11882,1547732,00.html\">Guardian<\/a> has a story about the rapid succes of V&eacute;lo&#8217;v which is reportedly the largest bike share organization in the world.<br \/>\nV&eacute;lo&#8217;v uses computerized racks with prepaid cards to distribute its 1500 bikes around Lyon.   It operates more like Toronto&#8217;s <a target=blank href=\"http:\/\/www.autoshare.com\/\">Autoshare<\/a> than <a target=blank href=\"http:\/\/communitybicyclenetwork.org\/?q=bikeshare\">Bikeshare<\/a> with a sprinkle of <a target=blank href=\"http:\/\/www.eucan.ca\/\">Eucan&#8217;s<\/a> funding model.  It seems V&eacute;lo&#8217;v is run by a <a target=blank href=\"http:\/\/www.jcdecaux.com\/content\/jcdecaux_en\/accueil\/\">billboard multinational<\/a>, which agreed to launch and operate the bike scheme in part-exchange for the right to sell advertising space on the city&#8217;s bus and tram shelters.<\/p>\n<p>I like the rational given for its success:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Our success reflects a cultural shift that you could call collective individualism,&#8221; Mr Vesco told the daily Lib&eacute;ration. &#8220;Everyone chooses their own destination, route and timetable, but they use a collective means of transport.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But I think the success might be better attributed to the technology.  Bikeshare, in comparison, has had a hard time <a target=blank href=\"http:\/\/communitybicyclenetwork.org\/files\/BS_Summer2005.pdf\">keeping track of its fleet.  (pdf) <\/a>    Unfortunately for Lyon that technology comes at a price &#8211; adverti$ing.<\/p>\n<p>At least Lyon is getting a new service unlike Toronto which is <a target=blank href=\"http:\/\/publicspace.ca\/monsterreportcard.htm\">selling its streets<\/a> for a service the city is already obligated to provide.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Guardian has a story about the rapid succes of V&eacute;lo&#8217;v which is reportedly the largest bike share organization in the world.
