{"id":1365,"date":"2006-12-01T15:28:32","date_gmt":"2006-12-01T19:28:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingtoronto.ca\/?p=1365"},"modified":"2013-01-21T13:05:08","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T18:05:08","slug":"whose-space-is-public-space","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2006\/12\/01\/whose-space-is-public-space\/","title":{"rendered":"Whose space is public space?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/images\/surveillance-MD-wire.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nJerrold Litwinenko at BlogTO had a <a href=\"http:\/\/blogto.com\/city\/2006\/11\/video_surveillance_in_public_spaces\/\">good post yesterday<\/a> on public space surveillance, and the comment section has a good debate going.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Last week, when a hail of bullets were fired at a moving car at Yonge &#038; Shuter, just a few steps away from the Eaton Center, I was instantly reminded of the horrific 2005 Boxing Day shooting.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.torontopolice.on.ca\/\">Toronto Police Services<\/a> issued a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.torontopolice.on.ca\/newsreleases\/release.php?id=11056\">press release<\/a> regarding last week&#8217;s shooting, including still images (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.torontopolice.on.ca\/newsreleases\/displayfile.php?id=3322\">image1<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.torontopolice.on.ca\/newsreleases\/displayfile.php?id=3323\">image2<\/a>) acquired from nearby private surveillance cameras that they hope will help them identify and apprehend possible suspects.<\/p>\n<p>Would police have any leads were it not for the video footage? I have little doubt that the media will we be hailing the use of surveillance cameras should these videos lead to arrests and convictions.
