{"id":1389,"date":"2006-12-13T07:45:15","date_gmt":"2006-12-13T11:45:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingtoronto.ca\/?p=1389"},"modified":"2006-12-13T07:45:15","modified_gmt":"2006-12-13T11:45:15","slug":"more-high-occupancy-lanes-coming-to-highways","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2006\/12\/13\/more-high-occupancy-lanes-coming-to-highways\/","title":{"rendered":"More high-occupancy lanes coming to highways"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.metrokc.gov\/kcdot\/news\/photos\/2004\/091304thisweekph1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <em>Toronto Star<\/em> is reporting today that the Ontario government will announce major plans to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/NASApp\/cs\/ContentServer?pagename=thestar\/Layout\/Article_Type1&#038;c=Article&#038;cid=1165963812158&#038;call_pageid=968332188492&#038;col=968793972154&#038;t=TS_Home\">expand the high-occupancy vehicle lanes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In early 2007, the McGuinty government will announce a major expansion plan for high-occupancy vehicle lanes on 400-series highways in the GTA.<\/p>\n<p>Transportation Minister Donna Cansfield told the <em>Star<\/em> that the expansion will not take away existing lanes to make way for lanes exclusively for vehicles with at least two occupants. But she gave no specifics of the plan.<\/p>\n<p>That effectively rules out adding HOV to the 401 atop Toronto, where the highway spans 16 lanes, and is not set to widen, according to the ministry.&#8221;We&#8217;re anticipating a 33 per cent growth in population by the year 2025,&#8221; Cansfield said. &#8220;We&#8217;re now looking at major (employment and residential) developments in Barrie, Innisfil, East Gwillimbury, Bradford. You&#8217;ve got to keep moving these people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Cansfield hinted at one possible HOV priority &#8212; a multi-year, multi-phase effort to add HOV lanes on Highway 400 all the way up to Barrie. She also wants the expansion to help carpoolers driving to GO train station parking lots.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You haven&#8217;t heard anyone complaining about (HOV).
