Many times this week lines from The Pretenders&#8217; &#8220;My city was gone&#8221; song have come to mind. A fine song from 1982, it&#8217;s about just this kind of loss and as close to an urbanist anthem as there&#8217;ll ever likely be.<\/p>\n<p><em>I went back to Ohio<br \/>\nBut my city was gone<br \/>\nThere was no train station<br \/>\nThere was no downtown<br \/>\nSouthtown it had disappeared<br \/>\nAll my favorite places<br \/>\nMy city had been pulled down<br \/>\nReduced to parking spaces<br \/>\nAy! Oh! Where did you go, Ohio?<br \/>\nI went back to Ohio<br \/>\nBut my family was gone<br \/>\nI stood on the back porch<br \/>\nThere was nobody home<br \/>\nI was stunned and amazed<br \/>\nMy childhood memories<br \/>\nSaw this world past<br \/>\nLike the wind thorugh the trees<br \/>\nAy! Oh! Where did you go, Ohio?<br \/>\nI went back to Ohio<br \/>\nBut my pretty countryside<br \/>\nHad been paved down the middle<br \/>\nBy a government that had no pride<br \/>\nThe farms of Ohio<br \/>\nhad been replaced by shopping malls<br \/>\nAnd Muzak filled the air<br \/>\nFrom Seneca to Cuyahoga Falls<br \/>\nSaid Ay! Oh!
