It was observed that people in Toronto don&#8217;t sit on the grass as much in our parks, and when when they do, they don&#8217;t do it in such close proximity to each other. Some of these groups were a little boozy, but it was all rather civilized, and even the kids drinking from tall cans of beer played nice.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/168\/491285556_cfad334ca2.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This cute miniature garbage truck made it easy to empty the bins. More proof there are small support vehicles available that don&#8217;t require cities have unnecessarily wide streets.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/230\/491284632_661e09bad6.jpg?v=0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/192\/491284616_b2f555c92a.jpg?v=0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/211\/491300399_95490f19f8.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/195\/491284584_2867eca0a5.jpg?v=0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/225\/491284664_eb5e76e34d.jpg?v=0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/207\/491284750_617ac6e18f.jpg?v=0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A national election was called last Sunday and signs went up overnight on the lamp poles around the city. They are different from Canadian signs in that most of them emphasize the individual much more than the party. Thus (as I overheard on Irish radio), &#8220;the city is being watched by giant pasty men.&#8221; They seem to add new ones by sliding them up the pole, sometimes 4 or 5 high. In the last photo, they dwarf one of our [murmur] signs (<a href=\"http:\/\/murmurdublindocklands.info\/place.php?467571\">this one<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/216\/491299685_833f89827c.jpg?v=0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Apart from the election posters, this one stood out because there isn&#8217;t much postering in general in Dublin, but also because I can&#8217;t remember the last time I saw pro-choice poster in Canada. Subtle things like this reminded me that this is still very much a Catholic country.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/232\/491299583_f3435cf4da.jpg?v=0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/203\/491299649_fd2c758a75.jpg?v=0\" \/><br \/>\nOne of many bleak Morrissey-worthy council housing blocks that make it hard to complain ever again about too much concrete in Toronto. Newer schemes are much more gentle and human-friendly. I posted a picture of this block <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/?p=1851\">the other day<\/a>, and you can listen to [murmur] stories that take place in the area <a href=\"http:\/\/murmurdublindocklands.info\/place.php?463532\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/murmurdublindocklands.info\/place.php?463528\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/209\/491300181_51d83e5e4c.jpg?v=0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Guys in white contamination jumpsuits were riding these Segway&#8217;s around advertising the sequel to 28 Days Later.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/217\/491299963_52723a2a62.jpg?v=0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/226\/491285084_2d64f908d6.jpg?v=0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The alley behind <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/O%27Connell_Street\">O&#8217;Connell Street<\/a> (the main drag) had a nice selection of empty kegs and informative tagging.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/218\/491300143_b82768bf45.jpg?v=0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/211\/491300107_c41e8f4025.jpg?v=0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/201\/491285298_2fd5d0b352.jpg?v=0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Out front on O&#8217;Connell there was a demonstration on Saturday in front of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/General_Post_Office_%28Dublin%29\">General Post Office<\/a> (main site of the 1916 Easter Uprising and symbol of Irish nationalism), one of the few things that directly referenced the (not so long ago) old, troubled days &#8212; instead there was lots of anticipation of the historic Northern Ireland home rule power sharing that started yesterday.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/206\/491285248_b9697e38af.jpg?v=0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lovely abandoned Irish brutalism up the street.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/214\/491299747_52afabd5f3.jpg?v=0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/220\/491299811_ef88e4439e.jpg?v=0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/199\/491299847_90d0101a75.jpg?v=0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Finally, one of many cozy streets that pass under the central <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dublin_Area_Rapid_Transit\">DART<\/a> train tracks. I&#8217;ve long thought the Gardiner in Toronto doesn&#8217;t have to be taken down (since it isn&#8217;t going anywhere soon), but just needs to be developed underneath. A string of shops along Yonge, Bay, Spadina, Jarvis and etc. would make the urban trail to the lake seamless and pleasant. Nice pillars like this would help too.
