{"id":2120,"date":"2007-07-24T09:00:25","date_gmt":"2007-07-24T13:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingtoronto.ca\/?p=2120"},"modified":"2013-01-21T14:43:58","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T19:43:58","slug":"tree-tuesday-the-beautified-princess","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2007\/07\/24\/tree-tuesday-the-beautified-princess\/","title":{"rendered":"Tree Tuesday: The beautified princess"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.treetours.to\/files\/st-lawrence_7a.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Every Tuesday, Todd Irvine of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leaftoronto.org\/\">Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests (LEAF)<\/a> will post a stop from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.treetours.to\/\">Toronto Tree Tours<\/a>, a collaborative project of LEAF and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publicspace.ca\/\">Toronto Public Space Committee.<\/a> The Toronto Tree Tours offers walking tours in neighbourhoods across the city as well as virtual tours on its web site. The aim is to introduce Torontonians to the individual trees in their neighbourhood while telling stories of our city&#8217;s ecological and cultural history.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.treetours.to\/beautified-princess\">St. Lawrence Market: Stop 7 <\/a><\/p>\n<p>The area on the west side of Princess Street was once a derelict strip of weeds strewn with litter along a rusty chain-link fence. A grouping of wind-seeded tree-of-heaven (<em>Ailanthus altissima<\/em>) and Manitoba maple (<em>Acer negundo<\/em>) trees had voluntarily taken up residence in the strip, which had become overgrown and unkempt. Members of the St. Lawrence Residence Association in conjunction with the non-profit group <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smartliving.ca\/stlawrence\/\">smartliving St. Lawrence<\/a> applied for money from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/cleanandbeautiful\/champions.htm#neighbourhood\">City of Toronto&#8217;s Neighbourhood Beautification Program<\/a> fund to refurbish the area. Members of the community came out to pull weeds, install decorative stones salvaged from a nearby construction site, and plant native species of flowers and shrubs. The trees were pruned by LEAF. The large stone at the south-edge of the strip has become a de facto TTC bench. Dan O&#8217;Leary a resident who has done much to contribute to the revitalization of St. Lawrence humorously calls this \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The Adult Garden\u00e2\u20ac\u009d in contrast to the gardens nearby, which are used mostly by children.
