The signs and ads that Toronto uses to tell people  about new developments &#8211; and to invite us to participate &#8211; are hard to  read and hard to make sense of.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-22151\" title=\"img_0149\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/08\/img_0149-e1313774223980-975x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"468\" height=\"491\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/08\/img_0149-e1313774223980-975x1024.jpg 975w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/08\/img_0149-e1313774223980-285x300.jpg 285w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/08\/img_0149-e1313774223980.jpg 1931w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 468px) 100vw, 468px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s  an example. This version, introduced a couple of years ago, is actually  better than the previous one &#8211; which was a lot of black-on-white small  print. But really, can you read that site plan? Can most people even  tell that it is a site plan? As for the words, there&#8217;s lots of legalese  here and very little clear language. This is not an effective way of  telling the neighbours what&#8217;s happening or even how they can speak up.  (What&#8217;s a &#8220;statutory public meeting,&#8221; exactly? Can I come? Where and  when is it?)<\/p>\n<p>Here <a title=\"http:\/\/meslin.wordpress.com\/2011\/08\/18\/development_notice\/\" href=\"http:\/\/meslin.wordpress.com\/2011\/08\/18\/development_notice\/\" target=\"_blank\">on his blog, Meslin has invited designers to come up with a better model.<\/a> Check it out (and read the discussion, already interesting) and please  contribute.
