{"id":2229,"date":"2007-08-24T11:56:36","date_gmt":"2007-08-24T15:56:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingtoronto.ca\/?p=2229"},"modified":"2013-01-21T14:10:04","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T19:10:04","slug":"a-del-grande-vision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2007\/08\/24\/a-del-grande-vision\/","title":{"rendered":"A Del Grande vision"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.torontosun.com\">Toronto Sun<\/a> published a rather thoughtful piece by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/councillors\/delgrande1.htm\">Councillor Mike Del Grande<\/a> about the need for a new deal for all Ontario cities in today&#8217;s print edition (unavailable on the web.) If you ignore the whiney tone of the article and the hard-to-believe claim <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"153\" src=\"http:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/councillors\/photos\/mdelgrande.jpg\" width=\"118\" align=\"right\" \/>that Mississauga has taken over Toronto as the &#8220;banking capital,&#8221;\u00a0Del Grande&#8217;s commentary is a pleasant surprise. In it, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/wards2000\/ward39.htm\">Scarborough-Agincourt<\/a> councillor finally takes a step beyond the dishonest claim he and his conservative cohorts on Council make that Toronto just needs to get its &#8220;fiscal house in order.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Del Grande&#8217;s proposal for a &#8220;new deal&#8221; would eliminate property tax all together and have the provincial government fund cities on sales, consumption and income taxes. According to Del Grande, money should be doled out based on a forumla that considers socio-economics, immigration, public transit and other factors that determine a city&#8217;s needs.<\/p>\n<p>The only major problem I have with Del Grande&#8217;s plan is that it means the provincial government would be relied upon for virtually every cent the City spends. This means we would get many more Subways to Nowhere and very little Transit City.<\/p>\n<p>But I&#8217;ll give Del Grande some credit for not positioning his version of a &#8220;new deal&#8221; as the substitute for new taxes. Though he is on record opposing the taxes, even Del Grande knows his long-term vision for Toronto can&#8217;t fix the immediate challenges facing the City.<\/p>\n<p>If you happen to be near a copy of the Sun, the article is on page 22.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Worth reading<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you enjoy following City Hall, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidetoronto.com\">Toronto Community News&#8217;s<\/a> City Hall\u00a0reporter David Nickle keeps a blog worth reading\u00a0on his trials and tribulations in the Clam Shell. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogs.insidetoronto.com\/cityhall\/\">The Art of the Improbable: A journal of politics and people at Toronto City Hall<\/a> includes Dave&#8217;s characteristically\u00a0dry sense of humour and is generally written under the assumption that you already know the news. I particularly enjoyed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogs.insidetoronto.com\/cityhall\/general\/why-cant-they-just-get-along\">this<\/a> entry based on an exchange Dave orchestrated\u00a0between <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/councillors\/minnan_wong1.htm\">Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.torontoenvironment.org\">Toronto Environmental Alliance&#8217;s<\/a> Katrina Miller.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Toronto Sun published a rather thoughtful piece by Councillor Mike Del Grande about the need for a new deal for all Ontario cities in today&#8217;s print edition (unavailable on the web.)
