All this week CBC Radio One’s Here and Now<\/a> program (99.1FM, 3-6pm daily) will be doing a series on changing neighbourhoods in Toronto. Today Spacing Associate Editor Shawn Micallef <\/strong>will be the houseguest during the show.<\/p>\n

During the week of September 3rd, we’ll be visiting three communities within the GTA that capture that spirit of change.<\/em><\/p>\n

Tuesday<\/strong>: Marks the beginning of our neighbourhood walkabout.\u00a0 We start in Mimico in South Etobicoke. It’s a community with roots as a working class railway town.\u00a0 Mimico is known for its modest housing costs and its small town feel. Today, it’s experiencing major new investments.<\/em><\/p>\n

Wednesday<\/strong>: We’ll stop in North-West Brampton. Once, this region was entirely farmland. Now, it’s a popular destination for new Canadians in search of homes in rapidly growing subdivision neighbourhoods. We’ll meet Simona Laiu, of Fletcher’s Meadow Secondary School. We’ll also speak with farmer, Heather Laidlaw, of Orchalaw Farms<\/strong><\/a> about the changes she’s seen.<\/em><\/p>\n

Thursday<\/strong>: Houseguest will be Naomi Klein. She’s an award-winning journalist, and author of the international bestseller “No Logo”. Her latest book is called “The shock Doctrine<\/strong><\/a>. We’ll also share your stories about your changing neighbourhoods.<\/em><\/p>\n

Friday<\/strong>: We’ll conclude our look at communities in the GTA with a final stop in Scarborough’s Wexford. That’s where monochromatic strip malls have turned into new ethnic marketplaces. We’ll meet Rafael Gomez, of 54 East Magazine<\/strong><\/a>. We’ll also speak with City Councillor Michael Thompson about the changes he’s trying to make in the area.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
