{"id":2531,"date":"2007-11-28T16:20:28","date_gmt":"2007-11-28T20:20:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingtoronto.ca\/?p=2531"},"modified":"2013-01-21T14:56:17","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T19:56:17","slug":"rom-tries-to-move-hot-dog-vendors-blocking-crystal-view","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2007\/11\/28\/rom-tries-to-move-hot-dog-vendors-blocking-crystal-view\/","title":{"rendered":"ROM tries to move hot dog vendors &#8220;blocking Crystal view&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/221\/508973681_950bbf0b57.jpg\" height=\"500\" width=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I just returned from a museums conference in Ottawa and was just sorting through my notes to post soon on a few of the surprisingly positive public space approaches that were discussed there, when my usual cynicism about the commercialization of museum spaces was restored by the following news item: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/servlet\/story\/LAC.20071128.ROM28\/TPStory\/TPNational\/Ontario\/\">ROM wants city to move street vendors from view of Crystal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It reinforces perceptions of snobbery and elitism that come with opening an empty starchitect-designed building and charging $20 a pop for people to simply walk through its spaces. Though the museum has filled up a bit more since June, it&#8217;s still largely empty, possibly in part &#8212; I&#8217;ve been told by sources in the know &#8212; because its pricey rooms are not adequate to maintaining delicate archival materials.<\/p>\n<p>I will post soon on those more positive things I heard about museums and public spaces, but this is not one of them.
