{"id":26096,"date":"2012-02-14T11:14:37","date_gmt":"2012-02-14T16:14:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingtoronto.ca\/?p=26096"},"modified":"2013-01-21T12:54:36","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T17:54:36","slug":"the-design-review-panel-looks-at-the-infotogo-pillars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2012\/02\/14\/the-design-review-panel-looks-at-the-infotogo-pillars\/","title":{"rendered":"The Design Review Panel looks at the InfoToGo Pillars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2012\/02\/14\/the-design-review-panel-looks-at-the-infotogo-pillars\/adpillar2011-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-26097\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26097\" title=\"adpillar2011\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2012\/02\/adpillar2011.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"437\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/planning\/2012\/agendas\/pdf\/drp_agenda_13feb12.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Yesterday<\/a> (PDF), Toronto&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/planning\/designreviewpanel.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Design Review Panel<\/a> looked at the new &#8220;InfoToGo&#8221; info\/ad pillars installed by Astral Media as part of the city&#8217;s street furniture contract, which have <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2011\/11\/10\/is-this-really-an-info-pillar\/\" target=\"_blank\">received a lot of criticism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/maxcityschool\" target=\"_blank\">Josh Fullan<\/a> of People Plan Toronto attended the review and gave this report to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/#!\/groups\/227154967321702\/\" target=\"_blank\">Walking Toronto<\/a> Facebook group, which he has allowed us to share here.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Good news<\/strong>: the Design Review Panel discussed the info pillars today and agreed that the placement and more importantly the design of the pillars was unacceptable sidewalk clutter. The words &#8220;atrocious&#8221; &#8220;awful&#8221; and &#8220;inexcusable&#8221; were all used by professional designers and architects to describe a major piece of street furniture largely in our downtown core.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Bad news<\/strong>: every time the issue of redesign of currently installed pillars came up, the Transportation Services rep from city hemmed and hawed, basically saying there is a contract and Astral is disinclined to consider redesign (no kidding) but will carefully look at future installations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Next steps<\/strong>: the recourse is to compel PWIC (Public Works and Infrastructure Committee) and council to force Astral into a redesign within existing contracting, location tweaks are not enough, and note that info pillars are a fraction of the total ad space agreement with astral. The Design Review Panel will be writing a letter to this effect to councillors and so should everyone else who cares about this issue.
