{"id":2667,"date":"2008-01-14T10:59:41","date_gmt":"2008-01-14T15:59:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingtoronto.ca\/?p=2667"},"modified":"2013-01-21T13:00:36","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T18:00:36","slug":"asshole-of-the-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2008\/01\/14\/asshole-of-the-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Asshole of the Week: Tony Bernardo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/30\/63058762_56fe0994de.jpg?v=0\" style=\"width: 500px; height: 344px\" height=\"344\" width=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I realize it&#8217;s early in the week but thanks to Tony Bernardo of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdnshootingsports.org\/\">Canadian Shooting Sports Association<\/a> I&#8217;m ready to call the competition for Asshole of the Week to a close and nominate him for Asshole of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>Following the murder of innocent bystander John O&#8217;Keefe by what media reports say was a 22-year-old using a legally owned and registered handgun, Mayor David Miller and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eyeweekly.com\/city\/cityhall\/article\/14990\">Councillor Michael Walker<\/a> spoke out on the need to ban all handguns. That got the media knocking at Bernardo&#8217;s door seeking comment. According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/servlet\/story\/LAC.20080115.SHOT15\/TPStory\/TPNational\/Ontario\/\"><em>Globe and Mail<\/em><\/a> Bernardo, executive director of the organization that is essentially the Canadian arm of the American <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nra.org\/\">National Rifel Association<\/a>, had this to say:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;In 2006, 2 per cent of the firearms homicides in Canada were done with a legal firearm,&#8221; and not necessarily by the gun&#8217;s legal owner, Mr. Bernardo said. &#8220;The year prior to that, it was 4 per cent. We&#8217;re talking about something that statistically is so small, it isn&#8217;t significant to even count it.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In 2005, the year Bernardo says 4% of murders were committed with a legal firearm, Canada experienced <a href=\"http:\/\/www40.statcan.ca\/l01\/cst01\/legal01.htm\">223 shooting deaths<\/a>. Quick math tells me that that 4% equals nine lives. I call that significant, it&#8217;s certainly significant for the families of those nine people and it&#8217;s significant enough to justify making all handguns illegal.<\/p>\n<p>While I&#8217;m not going to suggest that outlawing handguns will end all gun violence in the short term, there is no good reason for anyone to carry a handgun at any time.
