We’ve been talking about the crappy side of streetcars for the last week. Here’s something that might cheer up the transit geek in you: On Monday, October 24th<\/strong>, from noon until 5pm, the next generation of Toronto streetcars (possibly) will be on display at the Toronto Hummingbird Centre (1 Front Street East). The event is free, open to the public, and there’s door prizes.<\/p>\n

The five-hour public display by Bombardier<\/a> highlighting what could be sliding<\/em> along the streets of Toronto within the next decade. The TTC is in the process of considering what vehicle will replace the current stock of streetcars when these vehicles reach the end of their designed lifespans, sometime in 2008. It would be nice to have these babies — certainly the weight of Toronto’s behemoth streetcars puts a strain on the road and tracks, as well as the upkeep budget of the TTC. I would imagine the version we see in the above image would be a lot lighter. (thanks Transit Toronto<\/a> for the tip).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
