{"id":2678,"date":"2008-01-23T11:22:37","date_gmt":"2008-01-23T16:22:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingtoronto.ca\/?p=2678"},"modified":"2013-01-21T14:18:26","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T19:18:26","slug":"close-gould-street-rally","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2008\/01\/23\/close-gould-street-rally\/","title":{"rendered":"Close Gould Street Rally"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2028\/2200232035_42314470ef.jpg?v=0\" height=\"375\" width=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>[<em>Ed note: this post has been brought forward to remind those interested about this event.<\/em>]<\/p>\n<p>Ryerson University students have called a rally for Thursday, January 24 at noon to build support for making Gould St. between Victoria and Church Sts. car-free.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/rsuonline.ca\/\">Ryerson Students&#8217; Union<\/a> vice-president <a href=\"http:\/\/rsuonline.ca\/index.php?section_id=170\">Chris Drew<\/a> (pictured) says it is expected that the university&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ryerson.ca\/about\/masterplan\/\">master plan<\/a>, due out later in the year, will support closing off the two block stretch as a way of creating a safer and more connected campus. Drew was also quick to point out that their representative at city hall, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/councillors\/rae1.htm\">Councillor Kyle Rae<\/a>, has shown support for this pedestrian-friendly initiative so the rally is really about bringing the downtown neighbourhood together to show a united front and encourage speedy action from decision-makers.<\/p>\n<p>Closing part of Gould St. has been a point of discussion for many years. However, because of the construction of Toronto Life Square, which brought lane restrictions to Gould and Victoria Sts., the City of Toronto put a halt to the plans. Now that construction is completed, the Ryerson community is hoping their campus-building initiative will be given the green light.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Close Gould Street Rally<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Who:<\/strong> Ryerson students, community members and supporters of pedestrian-friendly initiatives<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where:<\/strong> Corner of Gould and Victoria Sts.
