{"id":2737,"date":"2008-02-04T16:30:22","date_gmt":"2008-02-04T21:30:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingtoronto.ca\/?p=2737"},"modified":"2013-01-21T15:30:13","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T20:30:13","slug":"plowed-bike-lanes-vital-to-winter-biking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2008\/02\/04\/plowed-bike-lanes-vital-to-winter-biking\/","title":{"rendered":"Plowed bike lanes vital to winter biking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/23\/31044886_061d3dc073.jpg\" height=\"333\" width=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Following the City&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/cycling\/bikewinter\/index.htm\">Bike Winter<\/a> promotion and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/cycling\/bikewinter\/coldest-day-ride.htm\">Coldest Day of the Year<\/a> ride, the Toronto Star featured an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/News\/GTA\/article\/298687\">article<\/a> paraphrasing the cycling committee chair on winter cycling.<em><strong> <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Plowed bike lanes and secure storage at transit stations are vital to persuading people to take their bikes to work in the winter, said Councillor Adrian Heaps, chair of the Toronto Cycling Committee. &#8220;It&#8217;s all part of our target of bike lanes this year and making sure transportation[department] looks at bike lanes as public thoroughfares, just like roads,&#8221; Heaps said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Although I have been greatly inspired (and educated) by the <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/?p=2629\">winter cyclist profiles<\/a> I&#8217;ve been posting here on Spacing, I feel it is time for full disclosure. I am still only a part-time winter cyclist. Although inspired (and I do ride my mini beater bike in winter) I&#8217;m still not up to the lengthy commute during rush hour in winter. I have done it, but it wasn&#8217;t pleasant. The main reason being lack of space on the road. I did not feel that I belonged. Sadly, it would appear that there are many motorists who share that feeling (and are willing to express it via honking horns or <a href=\"http:\/\/news.therecord.com\/Opinions\/article\/301210\">other methods<\/a>.) As noted in many of the profiles, winter cyclists in Toronto must<strong> take the lane.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Winter cyclists need to ride in the middle of the road due to conditions. These deplorable conditions following this latest storm have been documented by Martin Reis, a sort of Peter Parker in the cycling community, if you will.
