{"id":2813,"date":"2008-02-21T11:34:42","date_gmt":"2008-02-21T16:34:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingtoronto.ca\/?p=2813"},"modified":"2013-01-21T14:08:24","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T19:08:24","slug":"panel-tells-city-to-sell-lands-install-road-tolls-raise-taxes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2008\/02\/21\/panel-tells-city-to-sell-lands-install-road-tolls-raise-taxes\/","title":{"rendered":"Panel tells City to sell lands, install road tolls, raise taxes&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1058\/918518287_d89124734b.jpg\" height=\"333\" width=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Today, an independent panel is adivsing the City of Toronto to take on a number of drastic measures in order to right the city&#8217;s economic ship. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/News\/GTA\/article\/305654\">from the Star<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>A panel of independent experts is suggesting a revolutionary overhaul of the city of Toronto&#8217;s operations, including higher residential property taxes, a parking lot tax, regional road tolls, selling of surplus city lands, improving city worker productivity and raises for some politicians. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The report released this morning  by the six-member panel recommends:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Trading the Don Valley Parkway and the Gardiner Expressway to the province in exchange for a share of regional road tolls; <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Getting the province to provide $200 million of annual funding and long-term, stable financing to Canada&#8217;s most populous city; <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Selling off some of the city&#8217;s estimated $18 billion in real estate assets to help slash its debt load; <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Giving pay hikes to members of city council&#8217;s powerful executive committee.  <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>The report notes than 90 per cent of city jobs are unionized and represent about one-half the city&#8217;s budget.
