The Toronto Sun<\/em>, according to Councillor Howard Moscoe, stiffed Toronto taxpayers by neglecting to pay three months of its taxpayer-subsidized rent for an office at City Hall. In a motion filed last month, Councillor Moscoe said the Sun <\/em>only paid up after being notified that the details of their deliciously ironic fiscal folly would be made public.<\/p>\n

At its meeting beginning Monday, Toronto City Council will vote on three recommendations<\/a> [PDF] regarding this matter. If Council adopts the recommendations, the Sun <\/em>would be advised that rent cheques are expected monthly, that in the event of the Sun <\/em>falling behind again with their rent cheques City staff commence the eviction process and that lease rates for offices in the press gallery be increased to full market value.<\/p>\n

Currently, all media outlets that rent at City Hall enjoy paying just 50% of the market value for their offices. In the case of the Sun<\/em>, the subsidized rate works out to $17 per square foot.<\/p>\n

Also on the agenda for Monday’s meeting are Public Works and Infrastructure Committee reports<\/a> [PDF] on increasing fees for red-light runners (a request of the provincial government) and renewing the City’s contract for red-light cameras. The contract renewal is as a result of a 2006 report that determined the cameras caused a significant reduction in collisions. At the prodding of Councillor Kyle Rae, PWI is also bringing a motion forward that calls on Council to endorse International Car Free Day.<\/p>\n

Although it’s a little dry, for those who want to know what the City thinks it’s good and bad at, I recommend reading the report<\/a> [PDF] from Executive Committee that outlines the results of the 2006 Ontario Municipal Benchmarking Initaitive.<\/p>\n

Councillor Michael Walker wants to skewer Mayor David Miller for going to China<\/a> [PDF], Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong is trying to get his hands on Waterfront Toronto contract details<\/a> [PDF], a<\/a> bevy of<\/a> motions attempt<\/a> to derail<\/a> Mayor Miller’s move<\/a> to seek<\/a> [all PDF] enhanced powers for the office of mayor (as described<\/a> by Royson James in today’s Toronto Star<\/em>), Councillor Walker is also seeking Council’s support to request provincial legislation outlawing SLAPP lawsuits<\/a> [PDF] and to begin a discussion on the use of Tasers <\/a>[PDF], and Councillor Cesar Palacio is spearheading the attempt to make the TTC an essential service<\/a> [PDF].<\/p>\n
