{"id":2888,"date":"2008-03-18T12:30:21","date_gmt":"2008-03-18T17:30:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingtoronto.ca\/2008\/03\/18\/mta-trip-planner-wins-award\/"},"modified":"2008-03-18T12:30:24","modified_gmt":"2008-03-18T17:30:24","slug":"mta-trip-planner-wins-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2008\/03\/18\/mta-trip-planner-wins-award\/","title":{"rendered":"MTA trip planner wins award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2379\/1814524564_6dddb41c57.jpg?v=0\" height=\"375\" width=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As we wait for (and for some, <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.fawny.org\/2008\/01\/17\/trapezed\/\">worry<\/a> about) work on the TTC&#8217;s web trip planner to start and finish, it might be useful to peek at <a href=\"http:\/\/cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com\/2008\/03\/17\/mta-trip-planner-wins-web-award\/\">this post<\/a> on the New York Times City Room blog, as the MTA&#8217;s trip planner has won a web award. The gentle jab at the MTA in the first line isn&#8217;t so different than the ones many Torontonians give their own staid transit agency.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has won an award for an online tool. Seriously. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> To be sure, the M.T.A. Web site is not known for being particularly cutting edge. During a brief blackout in parts of Manhattan and the Bronx last June, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/06\/30\/nyregion\/30mta.html\">the M.T.A. Web site went down<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> Less than two months later, when crippling thunderstorms flooded and nearly shut down the subway system, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/08\/10\/nyregion\/10info.html\">M.T.A. Web site was temporarily bereft of up-to-date service information<\/a>. In response to withering criticism, the M.T.A. vowed to improve its communications with customers and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/09\/21\/nyregion\/21flood.html\">send out e-mail messages about service disruptions<\/a>, as other transit agencies do.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8212;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>So it is understandable that New York City Transit &#8212; the largest arm of the authority &#8212; proudly noted today that its online <a href=\"http:\/\/tripplanner.mta.info\/\">Trip Planner<\/a> tool had received a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Best of New York\u00e2\u20ac\u009d award from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.centerdigitalgov.com\/\">Center for Digital Government<\/a>, which provides research and advice on information technology in state and local government.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The MTA trip planner also has a version for <a href=\"http:\/\/tripplanner.mta.info\/mobile\">mobile devices<\/a>. Though we have high hopes for the TTC&#8217;s trip planner, many folks hope the raw data streams will be released and made public (they are already public property), so the open source geeks can make all kinds of applications on their own.
