I wanted to use &#8220;I guess I took a wrong turn at Albuquerque&#8221;, an oft-used quote by Bugs Bunny that I loved in my youth. Albuquerque is so random and in the middle of nowhere that I was always interested to find out more about the city. Yesterday I got up close with Albuquerque&#8217;s downtown.<\/p>\n<p>I only spent a few hours in Albuquerque so my observations are quick reactions mostly centred around the city&#8217;s core. I was surprised to find that I quite liked the urban design and streetscaping. The following are a series of photos with a tiny bit of commentary. You can see all photos on <a href=\"http:\/\/flickr.com\/photos\/spacing\/sets\/72157604598665638\/\">Spacing&#8217;s Flickr account<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2325\/2422882838_64a24a63a8.jpg\" height=\"332\" width=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Albuquerque has done a nice job of making its downtown core unique. There is nothing outstanding; no Gehry building or truly iconic skyscrapers. But I found that its use of colours and shapes left a lasting impression on me. One of the interesting bits of details was the use of tiles on sidewalks. There were numerous designs &#8212;  the one above is simple and elegant.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3134\/2422068543_3836fea88a.jpg\" height=\"332\" width=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There is a pedestrian mall, known as the Crossroads, that is about 200 metres long and leads to the city&#8217;s civic square. Office buildings and a few restaurants occupy either side, while street vendors hawk their goods. A decent tree canopy shades the mall while small garden beds add another layer of greenery. The garden beds have some nice designs worked into them (see below, including three photos stitched together).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3234\/2422882756_b2080aa662.jpg\" height=\"158\" width=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2371\/2422068583_b00559caf8_o.jpg\" height=\"745\" width=\"495\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2396\/2422068919_ca2d2e18cb.jpg\" height=\"332\" width=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I have no idea what this thing is (above), but I like that instead of leaving it as a grey, metallic eyesore, they gave it some colour. I suspect it used to be a public washroom.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2109\/2422062509_c52f00ef9a.jpg\" height=\"332\" width=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2043\/2422062255_fd20e959c6.jpg\" height=\"332\" width=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The sun was intense (for me) and I got to use these nice benches conveniently located under a set of trees. The benches appeared at almost every intersection.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3120\/2422062455_d3274a10a1.jpg\" height=\"332\" width=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I liked the use of cobble-stones to indicate a crosswalk, not to mention the PSA embedded into the road.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2401\/2422062391_1b230b480f.jpg\" height=\"332\" width=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There were numerous bike lanes leading into downtown Albuquerque and there seems to be a bit of bike culture in the city. This is a common bike rack found throughout many US and Canadian cities. The buses have bike racks on the front (below), just like Toronto, while they also seem to like our ever-popular ring-and-post design (two photos below).<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2214\/2422876576_8d234d1940.jpg\" height=\"332\" width=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2101\/2422063183_ea636ec56b_o.jpg\" height=\"749\" width=\"498\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I also found these unique bike locks (below) in Albuquerque&#8217;s main train and transit hub. I don&#8217;t know how they work since I couldn&#8217;t find a bike locked up to one, but they are certainly intriguing .<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3070\/2422062851_8ec1fbd997_o.jpg\" height=\"746\" width=\"496\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3219\/2422882536_31636054f5_o.jpg\" height=\"746\" width=\"495\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The city also uses pedestrian-oriented wayfinding signs. This is something I&#8217;ve long encouraged Toronto&#8217;s urban design department to consider. Below are info\/map pillars. One side does have an ad on it, but it was one of only two pieces of street furniture with any form of commercial material.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3185\/2422884312_07ce60e1e6_o.jpg\" height=\"733\" width=\"487\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3130\/2422070693_cfc91ea360_o.jpg\" height=\"728\" width=\"485\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3094\/2422068657_6c4b3b7bf6.jpg\" height=\"322\" width=\"485\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Trash bins that are sturdy, recognizable, and functional. Amazing!  (For non-Toronto residents, our <a href=\"http:\/\/alter-eco.net\/RCOAwardPage\/RCO%20-%20Recycling%20Council%20of%20Ontario_files\/WRW_Silver%2520Bin.jpeg\">trash bins<\/a> are horrible and <a href=\"http:\/\/flickr.com\/photos\/joeclark\/437906155\/in\/set-72157600033348739\/\">will continue to be<\/a> for the next 20 years, it seems.)<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2159\/2422068443_9777b1507f_o.jpg\" height=\"731\" width=\"488\" \/><\/p>\n<p>They also really like their large-scale murals.
