{"id":3056,"date":"2008-04-25T22:19:31","date_gmt":"2008-04-26T03:19:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingtoronto.ca\/2008\/04\/25\/ttc-workers-to-strike-at-midnight\/"},"modified":"2008-04-26T20:38:12","modified_gmt":"2008-04-27T01:38:12","slug":"ttc-workers-to-strike-at-midnight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2008\/04\/25\/ttc-workers-to-strike-at-midnight\/","title":{"rendered":"TTC STRIKE: Workers to walk out at midnight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/55\/106118695_906556fd8a.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sixty-five per cent of TTC workers rejected the contract recommended to them by their union executive, prompting a strike set to begin at midnight.<\/p>\n<p>The almost certain-to-be-turfed union president Bob Kinnear had this to say in a public statement, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/servlet\/story\/RTGAM.20080425.wttc0425\/BNStory\/National\/home\"><em>Globe <\/em><em>and Mail<\/em><\/a> :<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We have assessed the situation and decided that we will not expose our members to the dangers of assaults from angry and irrational members of the public&#8230;We have a legal responsibility to protect the safety of our members and so does the TTC.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>The union executive, which has a credibility of next to zero given the membership&#8217;s vote, will meet on Saturday morning to figure out its next steps.<\/p>\n<p>My immediate reaction to this as a political issue is that management now has the upper hand. Sure there&#8217;s a strike but no one in their right mind would think TTC Chairman Adam Giambrone brought forward an unfair offer to the workers, as the union executive recommended it to their members.<\/p>\n<p>Now I&#8217;m off to try to get one of the last trains downtown.
