{"id":3057,"date":"2008-04-26T02:32:51","date_gmt":"2008-04-26T07:32:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingtoronto.ca\/2008\/04\/26\/ttc-ordered-back-to-work-miller\/"},"modified":"2008-04-26T20:37:17","modified_gmt":"2008-04-27T01:37:17","slug":"ttc-ordered-back-to-work-miller","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2008\/04\/26\/ttc-ordered-back-to-work-miller\/","title":{"rendered":"TTC STRIKE: Workers to be ordered back: Miller"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3027\/2441900183_5bd57bb251.jpg\" height=\"333\" width=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/servlet\/story\/RTGAM.20080426.wttc0425\/BNStory\/National\/home\">developing story in the Globe and Mail<\/a> says Mayor David Miller has secured an agreement with the province to get the TTC back to work.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>A visibly angry David Miller said he has secured an agreement with the province to bring in back-to-work legislation as soon as possible after thousands of transit riders found themselves stranded Saturday morning when TTC workers went out on strike.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> Subways, streetcars and buses ground to a halt at midnight.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> The mayor told a late night, hurriedly arranged press conference at city hall that the union&#8217;s decision to walk out after the failing to ratify a tentative agreement, and abandon an earlier pledge to give Torontonians 48-hours notice of any strike, was \u00e2\u20ac\u0153unacceptable\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and \u00e2\u20ac\u0153irresponsible.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> He said he had demanded in a phone conversation with union leader Bob Kinnear that he give 48 hours notice, but Mr. Kinnear refused. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We&#8217;ve got people downtown tonight who might have relied on public transit. How are they going to get home?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Mr. Miller asked. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> In a statement e-mailed to The Globe and Mail, Premier Dalton McGuinty said he will \u00e2\u20ac\u0153proceed with back to work legislation at the first available opportunity to end service disruption with the TTC.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> It was unclear whether the legislation &#8212; which would require all-party approval to pass quickly &#8212; could be passed in an emergency session of the legislature tomorrow.
