{"id":31511,"date":"2012-06-29T15:51:21","date_gmt":"2012-06-29T19:51:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingtoronto.ca\/?p=31511"},"modified":"2013-01-21T13:00:08","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T18:00:08","slug":"my-bike-month-was-all-about-bixi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2012\/06\/29\/my-bike-month-was-all-about-bixi\/","title":{"rendered":"My Bike Month was all about BIXI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2012\/06\/bixi_user_profile.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"bixi_user_profile\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2012\/06\/bixi_user_profile-600x262.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"262\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Throughout June, in honour of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/cycling\/events\/index.htm\">Bike Month<\/a>, I resolved to use my <a title=\"BIXI Toronto\" href=\"http:\/\/toronto.bixi.com\">BIXI<\/a> subscription as often as logically possible. Tonight, when I leave the <em>Spacing<\/em> office near Bathurst and Bloor and head toward my kids\u2019 childcare around Bay and Wellesley, I will have made my 56th BIXI trip this month, and 213th since my subscription began last August. I know this because BIXI tracks all of my trips, and displays the stats on my user profile (see above).<\/p>\n<p>This is one of the coolest things about BIXI, and also one of the least discussed. It\u2019s also something I tell nonsubscribers about all the time, as part of my ongoing effort to get more people signed up. But that\u2019s not my main mantra about BIXI. What I usually tell the doubters is this:<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll use it more than you think.<\/p>\n<p>Really, I mean it. The only people I know who have no use whatsoever for a BIXI subscription are the ones who:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>already bike everywhere; and\/or<\/li>\n<li>absolutely never come downtown.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I think many potential BIXI users assume that the service\u2019s limited area excludes them from taking advantage of it. But I live in the Beaches, and I take my kids to school on the TTC every day, and I still found 56 reasons to ride a BIXI bike in this past month alone. Now, granted, my kids\u2019 childcare, the <em>Spacing<\/em> office, the office of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawandstyle.ca\/\"><em>Precedent<\/em><\/a> (the other magazine I work for), and most of the NXNE venues I played at or attended are all within BIXI\u2019s boundaries. But that\u2019s less special and fortunate than it sounds. A good friend of mine, who\u2019s also a BIXI subscriber with kids, jumps out of the family car at Allan Gardens (mid-commute from Leslieville) and grabs a bike so he can zip to his office at King and University.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->BIXI\u2019s latest ad campaign is all about folding the service into potential users\u2019 daily lives, but its approach focuses on mainly on leisure time activities: going to the movies, eating sushi, working out, going to shows. In my view, this focus misses out on a huge potential market: people like me who work downtown and make multiple stops in the core throughout the day. And although I and many of these users-to-be would benefit from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogto.com\/city\/2012\/03\/no_extra_bixi_bike_locations_to_be_added_in_toronto\/\">most-requested BIXI upgrades<\/a> (a wider network, more bikes, more stations, an app to check bike status at the station nearest you), all of these things cost money that the service clearly doesn\u2019t have. What it needs most of all is more subscribers, and for that, one simple and properly directed message would do:<\/p>\n<p>BIXI.
