They&#8217;ve done a nice job recently adding street addresses and updating the street network on the base map layer. The subway station locations of which some were comically misplaced (Wilson Station at Wilson and Keele) have been fixed as well, with a few exceptions <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&#038;hl=en&#038;geocode=&#038;q=wilson+and+transit+road,+toronto&#038;sll=37.0625,-95.677068&#038;sspn=33.214763,56.601563&#038;ie=UTF8&#038;ll=43.738631,-79.452621&#038;spn=0.003698,0.006909&#038;z=17\">Downsview Station appears to be located at the Wilson subway yards<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&#038;hl=en&#038;geocode=&#038;q=yonge+and+summerhill,+toronto&#038;sll=43.738631,-79.452621&#038;sspn=0.003698,0.006909&#038;ie=UTF8&#038;ll=43.682701,-79.390587&#038;spn=0.003701,0.006909&#038;z=17&#038;g=yonge+and+summerhill,+toronto\">Summerhill Station<\/a> is shown at Summerhill Avenue, and not at Shaftsbury, where the entrance is.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the good people at Google took it upon themselves to add local landmarks. This is where things seem to get very curious.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the most famous points of interest have been added to the maps, including City Hall, CN Tower, Massey Hall, Eaton Centre, the ROM and the AGO, and each of the main bank towers.<\/p>\n<p>Among these giants, are much more local downtown landmarks: El Mocambo, Horseshoe Tavern, Brunswick House, Keg Mansion, Bistro 990, and the Orbit Room. Lee&#8217;s Palace is there too, but seems to be where the Bloor Cinema is located. Perhaps the editors wanted to focus on arts, entertainment and live music venues, but it seems strange to add an upscale Bay Street restaurant and a steakhouse to the mix. Making things stranger are what&#8217;s conspicuously absent, including the St. Lawrence Centre and the Royal Alex and Princess of Wales Theatres. <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&#038;hl=en&#038;geocode=&#038;q=queen+and+beaconsfield,+toronto&#038;sll=43.657114,-79.404674&#038;sspn=0.003175,0.010053&#038;ie=UTF8&#038;ll=43.643855,-79.426367&#038;spn=0.003175,0.010053&#038;z=17\">The Drake Hotel is mapped<\/a>, but not the Gladstone.<\/p>\n<p>Even stranger are what places of worship are included, and which ones are excluded. The <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&#038;hl=en&#038;geocode=&#038;q=college+and+bathurst,+toronto&#038;sll=45.3979,-75.708396&#038;sspn=0.003594,0.006909&#038;ie=UTF8&#038;ll=43.652107,-79.392207&#038;spn=0.003175,0.010053&#038;z=17\">Toronto Chinese Baptist Church<\/a> on Beverley is there as well as <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&#038;hl=en&#038;geocode=&#038;q=ava+and+bathurst,+toronto&#038;sll=43.652107,-79.392207&#038;sspn=0.003175,0.010053&#038;ie=UTF8&#038;ll=43.697782,-79.424855&#038;spn=0.003173,0.010053&#038;z=17\">Holy Blossom Temple<\/a> on Bathurst, and <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&#038;hl=en&#038;geocode=&#038;q=ava+and+bathurst,+toronto&#038;sll=43.652107,-79.392207&#038;sspn=0.003175,0.010053&#038;ie=UTF8&#038;ll=43.686999,-79.401766&#038;spn=0.003173,0.010053&#038;z=17\">Deer Park and Timothy Eaton United Churches<\/a>, but not the historic downtown cathedrals of St. James or St. Michael&#8217;s. Only an elite selection of high schools are mapped as well, including University of Toronto Schools, Havergal College and <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&#038;hl=en&#038;geocode=&#038;q=bayview+and+post,+toronto&#038;sll=43.686999,-79.399728&#038;sspn=0.003173,0.005976&#038;ie=UTF8&#038;ll=43.711029,-79.388623&#038;spn=0.003172,0.010053&#038;z=17\">Northern Secondary<\/a>. Upper Canada College doesn&#8217;t make the cut, apparently.<\/p>\n<p>I just can&#8217;t figure it out, as there&#8217;s no rhyme or reason to what&#8217;s included or what&#8217;s not. I thought that, in jest, that it might have been the work of west-end hipsters, as Sneaky Dee&#8217;s is there, but then again, there&#8217;s no sign of that infamous &#8220;dive bar&#8221;, The Communist&#8217;s Daughter. My best guess is that this might have been the result of a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mental_map\">mental map exercise<\/a> by first-year University of Toronto geography students.
