{"id":3750,"date":"2009-03-12T11:30:28","date_gmt":"2009-03-12T16:30:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingtoronto.ca\/2009\/03\/12\/civic-scenery-civic-statuary\/"},"modified":"2013-01-21T14:56:57","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T19:56:57","slug":"civic-scenery-civic-statuary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2009\/03\/12\/civic-scenery-civic-statuary\/","title":{"rendered":"Civic Scenery, Civic Statuary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2342\/2471418660_7fd7221048.jpg?v=0\" title=\"Neighbours by Joe Rosenthal\" alt=\"Neighbours by Joe Rosenthal\" height=\"333\" width=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/images\/feature-graphics\/feature-public-exhibition.gif\" height=\"63\" width=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>EDITOR&#8217;S NOTE<\/strong>: Shaun Merritt begins a new column on public art in Toronto, looking at what we have, where it is, and some of the stories behind it. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>One day while looking into the history of Toronto I came across a fascinating piece on the CBC&#8217;s website created by radio host Mike Smee and his friend Alan Skeoch, my history teacher from Parkdale Collegiate and a regular columnist on &#8220;Radio Noon.&#8221; The site featured walking tours of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/toronto\/features\/skeoch_island\/index2.html\">Toronto islands<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/toronto\/features\/beach\/index.html\">the Beach<\/a>,\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/toronto\/features\/sunnyside\/index.html\">Sunnyside<\/a>, and the numerous installations of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/toronto\/features\/statuesque\/index.html\">public art on University Avenue<\/a>. &#8220;The Art of the Avenue,&#8221; as they called it, describes the stories behind the artwork and is the inspiration behind this current endeavour to catalogue Toronto&#8217;s Public Art, some that may be overlooked as we pass through the city.<\/p>\n<p>The first exhibit of public art is entitled\u00a0 &#8220;Neighbours&#8221; by artist Joe Rosenthal. The work is located at <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.ca\/maps\/ms?hl=en&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;msa=0&amp;msid=104370647730957874265.00045aca7161c64643e93&amp;ll=43.665411,-79.390994&amp;spn=0.004928,0.008283&amp;z=17\">St. Michael&#8217;s College<\/a> at the University of Toronto. It is made of bronze and was installed in 2001.<\/p>\n<p>Artist Joe Rosenthal was born in Romania in 1921. He came to Canada in 1927 and served in the Canadian Armed Forces from 1942-1945.
