Presented by the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations (IfA), the Goethe-Institut, and Evergreen: At a time when more than half of the world\u2019s population is living in cities, the effects of climate change on urban life can no longer be ignored. The exhibition \u201cPost-Oil City: The History of the City\u2019s Future,\u201d as well as the accompanying catalogue edited by ARCH+, present innovative projects in Asia, Africa, and America that address urgent questions: How will the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy affect the process of urban planning and the city? How will the use of renewable energies affect urban metabolism and the politics of sustainability and mobility? By contrasting a dozen current projects in the field of sustainable urban planning with 9 from the past, the exhibition aims to show that many of today\u2019s developments have their roots in the urban utopias of mid-20th-century modernism. Today, urban planners are returning to these concepts and adapting them to the challenges posed by climate change, a limited supply of fossil fuels, economic recession, and global systemic crisis.<\/p>\n

While progress has not been problem\u2010free, the vision for Regent Park as a mixed income community is gearing up to enter its third phase, led by Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC), the Daniels Corporation and many community partners. The revitalized neighbourhood boasts commercial facilities, parks, an arts and cultural centre, an aquatic centre, and the Daniels Centre of Learning which, in collaboration with George Brown, provides learning, training and employment opportunities for residents. At the end of phase two, there will be upwards of 12,000 residents living in a blend of rent\u2010geared\u2010to\u2010income apartments, affordable rental and home ownership units as well market housing. What are the lessons that can be learned after a decade of rebuilding and are they transferable to other parts of the city and region?<\/p>\n
