{"id":44332,"date":"2013-06-27T11:05:13","date_gmt":"2013-06-27T15:05:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/?p=44332"},"modified":"2013-06-27T11:05:13","modified_gmt":"2013-06-27T15:05:13","slug":"checking-out-ottawas-new-bank-st","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2013\/06\/27\/checking-out-ottawas-new-bank-st\/","title":{"rendered":"Checking out Ottawa&#8217;s new Bank St."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was in Ottawa last weekend and strolled along Bank St. in the Glebe neighbourhood, which was recently re-done with new street furniture, art and paving (last time I was there, 2 years ago, it was under construction).<\/p>\n<p>Bank St. is a narrow and busy road and sidewalk, so it&#8217;s an area where you have to make the best use of space. The new public art made use of the extra space created by sidestreets, often with sidewalk bulb-outs.<\/p>\n<p>The metal artwork was all done by artist Tim desClouds. My favourite part was the painted metal chairs bolted into the pavement at intervals &#8212; both attractive and useful.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2013\/06\/27\/checking-out-ottawas-new-bank-st\/art-chairs\/#main\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-44333\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-44333\" alt=\"Chairs\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/06\/art-chairs.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/06\/art-chairs.jpg 400w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/06\/art-chairs-300x216.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Several City benches has also been added, with an intriguing design in which rather than being in the middle, the armrest is set to one side, creating a double and a single set of seating. Sometimes, if two people are on a bench together, no-one will want to sit at the edge like a third wheel, but this creates a bit of separation to make it more inviting. It&#8217;s a thoughtful piece of design for a bench that size.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2013\/06\/27\/checking-out-ottawas-new-bank-st\/bench\/#main\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-44334\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-44334\" alt=\"Bench\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/06\/bench.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/06\/bench.jpg 400w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/06\/bench-300x240.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The bike posts are also specific to the area, monogrammed with a &#8220;G&#8221; for the Glebe.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2013\/06\/27\/checking-out-ottawas-new-bank-st\/bikepost\/#main\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-44335\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-44335\" alt=\"Bike ring-and-post\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/06\/bikepost.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/06\/bikepost.jpg 400w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/06\/bikepost-300x236.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There were also some multiple-bike racks in various sizes in the same style, fitted in where there was space at the sides of buildings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2013\/06\/27\/checking-out-ottawas-new-bank-st\/bikerack\/#main\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-44336\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-44336\" alt=\"Multi bike rack\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/06\/bikerack.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/06\/bikerack.jpg 400w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/06\/bikerack-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;G&#8221; monogram was also visible on the tree-protection fences. These were illustrated with symbols cut into the metal representing the various stores on the street.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2013\/06\/27\/checking-out-ottawas-new-bank-st\/tree\/#main\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-44339\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-44339\" alt=\"Tree fence\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/06\/tree.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/06\/tree.jpg 300w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/06\/tree-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2013\/06\/27\/checking-out-ottawas-new-bank-st\/tree2\/#main\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-44340\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-44340\" alt=\"Tree fence\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/06\/tree2.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/06\/tree2.jpg 300w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/06\/tree2-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A nice touch was the decorative wrap created for the dull grey traffic signal boxes (I&#8217;m not sure if this is just for this area or for other parts of town too).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2013\/06\/27\/checking-out-ottawas-new-bank-st\/wrap\/#main\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-44341\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-44341\" alt=\"Wrap for traffic signal box\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/06\/wrap.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/06\/wrap.jpg 300w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/06\/wrap-243x300.jpg 243w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another elegant piece of street furniture is the fish-decorated sewer grates, although <a href=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/ottawa\/2009\/12\/04\/the-sign-of-the-fish\/\" target=\"_blank\">these are city-wide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2013\/06\/27\/checking-out-ottawas-new-bank-st\/sewergrate\/#main\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-44342\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-44342\" alt=\"Ottawa sewer grate\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/06\/sewergrate.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/06\/sewergrate.jpg 400w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/06\/sewergrate-300x189.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I remember, growing up in Ottawa, Bank St. sidewalks always felt cramped and a bit dingy, even though it had some busy stores and other destinations.
