The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nxtcityprize.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">NXT CITY PRIZE<\/span><\/a>\u00a0will be announced in mid-August, and the deadline for submissions is July 31st.\u00a0<em>Spacing<\/em>\u00a0has teamed up with the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nxtcityprize.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">NXT CITY PRIZE<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to provide our readers with a series of Q&amp;As with local and national city builders in the lead up to the announcement of the winning design.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/07\/LINE-600-GREY.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-49164\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/07\/LINE-600-GREY.jpg\" alt=\"LINE-600-GREY\" width=\"600\" height=\"10\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/07\/LINE-600-GREY.jpg 600w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/07\/LINE-600-GREY-300x5.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">TODAY: BOB LEHMAN,\u00a0urban planner<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p style=\"color: #66155f;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><strong>What public space improvements would you like to see in Toronto?<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>We no longer have the luxury of overbuilding our infrastructure. \u00a0Having now determined that we cannot, or are not willing to, afford the cities we have created, the next few decades will see an increasing compression of the urban structure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #66155f;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><strong>What do you consider to be great examples of public space in other global cities?<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>There are great examples in Europe of how this can work well or fail miserably, and we should learn from those experiences.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #66155f;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><strong>What advice do you have for young people as it relates to public space?<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Public spaces in our cities both link our activities and focus our interests. \u00a0The future should see a much greater civic pride in successful public spaces, as they become more important and their sense of place is heightened.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/08\/Bob-pic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-49252\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/08\/Bob-pic.jpg\" alt=\"Bob pic\" width=\"347\" height=\"319\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/08\/Bob-pic.jpg 347w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/08\/Bob-pic-300x275.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 347px) 100vw, 347px\" \/><\/a>Robert Lehman\u00a0is the President of Lehman &amp; Associates and a founding partner of Meridian Planning Consultants, the Planning Partnership and Metropolitan Knowledge International. Working initially for the City of Toronto he became a consultant in 1974 working with KPMG and the IBI Group, establishing his own practice in 1980.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0Bob\u2019s has written over 100 Official Plans, policy guidelines, zoning by-laws and Secondary Plans. He as been involved as an expert witness in over 500 OMB, Court and other tribunal proceedings.\u00a0\u00a0He has acted as project director for major research and policy studies such as the Urban Density Study and was on the consulting team for the Growth Plan and the Metrolinx Plan for the Greater Toronto Area.\u00a0\u00a0He recently developed a provincial policy guideline dealing with religious heritage properties.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Twice planner in residence at the University of Waterloo School of Planning, Bob is the author of the Zoning Trilogy, a bestseller of the American Planning Association Bookstore. Twice awarded with the Canadian Institute of Planners Honour Award for Planning Excellence Bob is a Fellow of the Institute and served as the Chair of the College of Fellows from 2010 to 2014.
