The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nxtcityprize.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">NXT CITY PRIZE<\/span><\/a>\u00a0will be announced in mid-August, and the deadline for submissions is July 31st.\u00a0<em>Spacing<\/em>\u00a0has teamed up with the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nxtcityprize.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">NXT CITY PRIZE<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to provide our readers with a series of Q&amp;As with local and national city builders in the lead up to the announcement of the winning design.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/07\/LINE-600-GREY.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-49164\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/07\/LINE-600-GREY.jpg\" alt=\"LINE-600-GREY\" width=\"600\" height=\"10\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/07\/LINE-600-GREY.jpg 600w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/07\/LINE-600-GREY-300x5.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">TODAY: JAY WALL, c<\/span>reative director\/designer at STUDIO JAYWALL<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #66155f;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><b>What public space improvements have you contributed to that you&#8217;re proud of?<\/b><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #2d2d2d;\">As a graphic designer obsessed with the details of the city, I look for opportunities to use design and visual communication for good. Unfortunately, much of the design industry devotes itself to causes that have a negative impact on public space, namely by creating corporate advertising for billboards. So I\u2019m proud to be running a design studio that does the opposite \u2013 using design to support projects of progressive city-building and meaningful civic participation. I believe graphic design can play a key role in communicating ideas, generating public participation, and imagining the world we want to build.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #2d2d2d;\">There are countless inspiring public space initiatives in Toronto, and I&#8217;ve been honoured to collaborate with some great folks. A few highlights from my studio&#8217;s work over the past year include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"color: #2d2d2d;\">Cover illustration for the latest issue of <i>Spacing<\/i>, on the theme <a href=\"http:\/\/jaywall.com\/Spacing-Cities-for-People\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Cities for People<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"color: #2d2d2d;\">Creative direction and design of the public campaign to promote the Jane\u2019s Walk global festival<\/li>\n<li style=\"color: #2d2d2d;\">Design of a new publication for Evergreen CityWorks, called <i>Intersection<\/i>, about sustainable city-building, urban policy, and civic engagement<\/li>\n<li style=\"color: #2d2d2d;\">Co-creation of <a href=\"http:\/\/playwalk.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Playwalk<\/a>, a project which encourages you to use your senses and playfully get to know your city (in collaboration with the Society of Homo Ludens)<\/li>\n<li style=\"color: #2d2d2d;\">Co-design of the sports pad at the East Scarborough Storefront, part of the Community Design Initiative, in collaboration with local community members, ERA Architects, archiTEXT, and sustainable.TO.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"color: #2d2d2d;\">In addition to working on client projects, I also believe there\u2019s a place for creative civil disobedience to challenge the status quo. This is why I also do street art and have participated in a few collaborative projects. A couple years ago, Astral removed several bicycle posts from the sidewalk on College Street in order to install one of their controversial \u201cinfo pillar\u201d billboards. In response, I collaborated with the Urban Repair Squad and Mexico-based Camina Haz Ciudad to paint some white stencils on the ground, honouring the <a href=\"http:\/\/torontoist.com\/2012\/04\/spotted-ghost-bike-posts\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0070cf;\">disappeared bike posts<\/span><\/a>. Weeks later, Astral responded with an ad in that very info pillar, apologizing for the mistake, re-affirming their commitment to public space, and promising to install dozens of new bike posts in the area. It turns out, the ad was a hoax \u2013 I had designed it and had it installed as part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cartographyto.co.nr\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0070cf;\">cARTographyTO<\/span><\/a> artistic takeover of info pillars across the city. The project ignited a national debate about public space, advertising, and art \u2013 which confirmed that my work was striking a chord.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #66155f;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><b>What public space improvements would you like to see in Toronto?<\/b><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #66155f;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here\u2019s my wish list for Toronto:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"color: #2d2d2d;\">complete streets with improved pedestrian and cycling infrastructure (and not just downtown)<\/li>\n<li style=\"color: #2d2d2d;\">a fully-connected grid of bike lanes, integrated with public transit nodes<\/li>\n<li style=\"color: #2d2d2d;\">a comprehensive wayfinding system for all modes of transit<\/li>\n<li style=\"color: #2d2d2d;\">de-corporatization of public space, including tighter restrictions on billboards and a crackdown on illegal billboards<\/li>\n<li style=\"color: #2d2d2d;\">a nuanced, community-led approach for addressing graffiti and street art<\/li>\n<li style=\"color: #2d2d2d;\">creative improvements to under-utilized public spaces, such as those being developed by my friends at <a href=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2014\/07\/25\/nxt-city-prize-marisa-bernstein-nicolas-koff\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0070cf;\">Projexity<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"color: #2d2d2d;\">improved access to our wonderful ravines from streets and subway stations<\/li>\n<li style=\"color: #2d2d2d;\">seamless connection from the downtown core to the waterfront<\/li>\n<li style=\"color: #2d2d2d;\">a new all-season, outdoor\/underground winterized public space (imagine hanging out in a park on a winter day like we do in the summertime)<\/li>\n<li style=\"color: #2d2d2d;\">better public notices \u2013 which is why I\u2019m working with Dave Meslin on the Dazzling Notice Awards, to recognize Canadian municipalities who are raising the bar in public outreach (winners to be announced on September 11th at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/284485558401673\/\" target=\"_blank\">Toronto the Good<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"color: #66155f;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><strong>What do you consider to be great examples of public space in other global cities?<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #2d2d2d;\">My top 5:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"color: #2d2d2d;\">S\u00e3o Paulo\u2019s bold move to ban outdoor advertisements<\/li>\n<li style=\"color: #2d2d2d;\">New York City\u2019s transformation of an abandoned rail line to create High Line Park<\/li>\n<li style=\"color: #2d2d2d;\">Detroit\u2019s community gardens created on vacant lots<\/li>\n<li style=\"color: #2d2d2d;\">Halifax\u2019s waterfront with playgrounds, public art, and pedestrian streets<\/li>\n<li style=\"color: #2d2d2d;\">great cycling infrastructure in many cities across Europe<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"color: #66155f;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><b>What advice do you have for young people as it relates to public space?<\/b><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #2d2d2d;\">Remember that the city is yours. It belongs to all of us, so don\u2019t be afraid of taking things into your own hands and creating the kind of city you want to live in. It\u2019s important for us to advocate and shape policy, but we don\u2019t have to be satisfied with the status quo of public space being ruled by corporate interests and we aren\u2019t limited to what makes it through the red tape of government. So get out there, get to know unfamiliar parts of the city, and when an idea strikes, just go ahead and make it happen.
