{"id":54036,"date":"2016-01-29T13:00:17","date_gmt":"2016-01-29T18:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/?p=54036"},"modified":"2016-01-29T23:35:04","modified_gmt":"2016-01-30T04:35:04","slug":"the-republic-of-rathnelly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2016\/01\/29\/the-republic-of-rathnelly\/","title":{"rendered":"The independent Toronto Republic of Rathnelly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To celebrate the Centennial, on Saturday, June 10, \u00a01967, the roughly 400 residents of Rathnelly Ave. and several nearby streets decided to quit\u00a0Toronto and Canada.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Toronto Star<\/em> broke word\u00a0of the new country on the front page the following Monday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[Rathnelly] seceded in a bloodless, post-breakfast coup and seized control of the five blocks west of Avenue Rd. and north of the Davenport Rd. tracks,&#8221; the paper said.<\/p>\n<p>A small army\u2014the Republic of Rathnelly Irregulars, which was made up of\u00a0uniformed kids\u2014 claimed\u00a0a nearby park and renamed it Freedom\u00a0Square.\u00a0A space rocket fleet made out of cardboard was assembled on one of the front lawns, and barricades went up at the end of the street, closing it to traffic.<\/p>\n<p>The street festival-cum-declaration of independence even received a visit from Mayor William Dennison and\u00a0Metro Controller\u00a0Margaret Campbell, and the two governments officially\u00a0entered into talks.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As tankards of Rathnellian mead\u2014the republic&#8217;s only liquid assets\u2014were handed round, statesman met statesman in an attempt to hammer out a treaty,&#8221;\u00a0wrote the <em>Star<\/em>. In the end, the two sides reached an agreement, and the\u00a0Republic of Rathnelly peacefully rejoined the city and country at midnight.<\/p>\n<div class=\"getty embed image\" style=\"background-color: #fff; display: inline-block; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue',Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif; color: #a7a7a7; font-size: 11px; width: 100%; max-width: 594px;\">\n<div style=\"padding: 0; margin: 0; text-align: left;\"><a style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/502842107\" target=\"_blank\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"overflow: hidden; position: relative; height: 0; padding: 69.696970% 0 0 0; width: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"display: inline-block; position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; margin: 0;\" src=\"\/\/embed.gettyimages.com\/embed\/502842107?et=1-wNE-yTT55kX781NVg8vg&amp;viewMoreLink=off&amp;sig=NDaf9yEMGQB8lLsIwajFJ18SMh8b_Ti16oQFoy8HM10=&amp;caption=true\" width=\"594\" height=\"414\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin: 0;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>But that wasn&#8217;t the end of the tree-lined street&#8217;s novelty bid for independence.\u00a0In February, 1969, the street seceded again during its annual Winter Games. Residents of the street lit bonfires, sipped mulled wine, and elected a government, including\u00a0of a Minister of Protest and a Minister of External Affairs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re boozing and dancing in the streets\u2014that&#8217;s something they don&#8217;t allow in Toronto,&#8221; resident Norman Cooper told the <em>Star<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from the obvious fun, the Republic of Rathnelly served a useful purpose in uniting the neighbourhood. By forming a little country,\u00a0the Rathnelly Area Residents&#8217; Association brought neighbours together and attracted\u00a0attention to local issues.<\/p>\n<p>When the Spadina and Crosstown expressway\u00a0projects threatened to carve up their nation, the residents\u00a0passionately deputized before Metro Council. When a lack of play space frustrated local kids, the\u00a0army &#8220;invaded&#8221; the nearby Poplar Plains pumping station, ceremonially claiming the keys from superintendent Lee Norgate.<\/p>\n<p>In response, city&#8217;s parks and recreation committee agreed to develop a portion of the pumping station property as a playground as long as\u00a0Rathnelly payed for the equipment. (The leaders\u00a0of the republic later unsuccessfully petitioned\u00a0the Canadian government for &#8220;foreign aid&#8221; to help pay for the structures.)<\/p>\n<p>Collecting &#8220;taxes&#8221; (actually\u00a0dues for the residents&#8217; association) gave residents\u00a0a pool of money\u00a0to use in their battles.<\/p>\n<div class=\"getty embed image\" style=\"background-color: #fff; display: inline-block; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue',Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif; color: #a7a7a7; font-size: 11px; width: 100%; max-width: 594px;\">\n<div style=\"padding: 0; margin: 0; text-align: left;\"><a style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/499311091\" target=\"_blank\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"overflow: hidden; position: relative; height: 0; padding: 74.410774% 0 0 0; width: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"display: inline-block; position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; margin: 0;\" src=\"\/\/embed.gettyimages.com\/embed\/499311091?et=U35SkCWNSRVieodSKj_9dg&amp;viewMoreLink=off&amp;sig=jmVPLwhUtK3H3FcxXm4dhJhwa7thnGjJaXxYQsAXJ6U=&amp;caption=true\" width=\"594\" height=\"442\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin: 0;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;I think it got started over a drunken bridge table one night,&#8221; Mrs. Peter Marani, who lived at No. 3, told the <em>Star<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>She said the idea came from\u00a0the plot of the movie <em>Passport to Pimlico<\/em>, which was itself inspired by\u00a0the Canadian government&#8217;s wartime decision to temporarily declare the\u00a0maternity ward of Ottawa Civic Hospital international territory for the birth of Princess Margriet of the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p>Princess Margriet&#8217;s parents,\u00a0Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard, were living in Canada while\u00a0the Netherlands was occupied by Nazi Germany. Had\u00a0Margriet been born in Canada, her claim to the Dutch throne could\u00a0have been jeopardized, so the government briefly ceded its claim to the ward, making it international territory.<\/p>\n<p>By 1970, little Rathnelly\u00a0had appointed local alderman David Rotenburg ambassador to City Hall and\u00a0begun<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u00a0issuing passports. The republic even held an Expo in which many of the homes were decorated in the style of various countries around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"getty embed image\" style=\"background-color: #fff; display: inline-block; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue',Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif; color: #a7a7a7; font-size: 11px; width: 100%; max-width: 416px;\">\n<div style=\"padding: 0; margin: 0; text-align: left;\"><a style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/502262789\" target=\"_blank\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"overflow: hidden; position: relative; height: 0; padding: 142.788462% 0 0 0; width: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"display: inline-block; position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; margin: 0;\" src=\"\/\/embed.gettyimages.com\/embed\/502262789?et=z9BiVTDFS0hWpGxe7AFmeQ&amp;viewMoreLink=off&amp;sig=Oi89bsytOmmMXLn12fQYlkha8HIIC9g3zeokM4Fknog=&amp;caption=true\" width=\"416\" height=\"594\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin: 0;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>Unusually for a republic,\u00a0Rathnelly had a queen and a president.\u00a0Eileen Robertson at No. 30 was crowned monarch in the 1960s and Ambrose Small, a\u00a0Toronto\u00a0opera impresario whose mysterious disappearance in 1919 became\u00a0a national sensation, was elected\u00a0the first leader, beating out\u00a0a guinea pig and a poodle named Bubbles.<\/p>\n<p>Rathnelly had a\u00a0coat of arms featuring a martini glasses, a railroad track, an Expo symbol, and a drawing of the local street layout.\u00a0The flag was red, yellow, and beige with a red border and an\u00a0image of a fort. &#8220;Rathnelly in Irish means fort,&#8221; Queen Eileen I told the <em>Star<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Aged 97, Rathnelly&#8217;s monarch was still on the throne in May, 1986. She took a consort, local architect Jim Acland, in 1975 and continued to observe Rathnelly Day each year.<\/p>\n<p>The annual celebration will mark its 50th anniversary next year.<\/p>\n<p>In 2012, in honour of its rebellious history, the Republic of Rathnelly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/gta\/2012\/07\/06\/torontos_rathnelly_neighbourhood_sprouting_signs_of_secession.html\">received special City of Toronto road signs<\/a> bearing the country&#8217;s name and coat-of-arms. Like the Annex,\u00a0Leslieville and other bona fide neighbourhoods, the city provided the little territory a measure of\u00a0official recognition.<\/p>\n<p>Many of its citizens have now passed away or moved, but the legacy of the republic&#8217;s\u00a0community activism lives on. The\u00a0Poplar Plains pumping station still has play equipment and the Spadina and Crosstown expressways\u00a0never made it south of Eglinton Ave.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s like a village in the centre of a city,&#8221; said Joan Gauthier, who lived at No. 24 Rathnelly, in 1970. &#8220;The lunacy is just a surface thing, the visible signs of a lively and genuine interest in urban living.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To celebrate the Centennial, on Saturday, June 10, \u00a01967, the roughly 400 residents of Rathnelly Ave. and several nearby streets decided to quit\u00a0Toronto and Canada.
