We&#8217;ll be on the lookout for websites outside the country that approach themes related to urban experiences and issues in Toronto.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&bull; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/id\/2223035\/\">Why are Americans so suspicious of roundabouts?<\/a> The United States now has about 2,000 roundabouts, a strikingly small figure in comparison to Australia, a country with a similar &#8220;traffic landscape&#8221; yet whose traffic-fatality rate is half the size of America&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>&bull; The recent subway accidents in Washington and San Francisco have been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.infrastructurist.com\/2009\/07\/20\/what-would-our-headlines-look-like-if-rail-travel-were-only-as-safe-as-car-travel\/\">stoking America&#8217;s fear of rail travel<\/a>.\u00a0 Yet if the numerous daily car accidents were given similar media coverage, the public might be singing a very different tune.<\/p>\n<p>&bull; Public art projects have been selected for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.architectureanddesign.com.au\/article\/BREAKING-NEWS-Winning-designs-for-Sydneys-laneways-revealed-images\/490332.aspx\">downtown Sydney, Australia laneways<\/a>.\u00a0 Many of the eight projects are themed around climate change and the relationship humans have with the environment.<\/p>\n<p>&bull; &#8216;Dumpster diving&#8217; has taken on a whole new meaning in industrial Brooklyn, where <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/07\/20\/arts\/design\/20pool.html?_r=1\">Dumpters have been converted into swimming pools<\/a> and are being used as the star attraction of a new &#8216;lo-fi urban country club.&#8217;\u00a0 The &#8216;club&#8217; opened earlier this month and features three connected &#8216;dumpster pools,&#8217; a boccie court, grills, cabanas and several lounge chairs.<\/p>\n<p>&bull; Daylighting has taken root in Seattle, where <a href=\"http:\/\/seattletimes.nwsource.com\/html\/localnews\/2009357492_thorntoncrk19m0.html\">Thornton Creek now flows above ground<\/a> for the first time in decades.\u00a0 Formerly a parking lot, the stream spans nearly three acres and provides a natural filter which cleans the runoff from neighbouring streets in the surrounding 600 acres of the city.<\/p>\n<p>&bull; Proposals are being made <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nola.com\/news\/index.ssf\/2009\/07\/photos_for_iten.html\">to remove the I-10 elevated Expressway<\/a> that runs along North Clairborne Avenue, New Orleans.\u00a0 Before the arrival of the I-10 in the 1950s, some remember North Clairborne as the &#8220;black people&#8217;s Canal street,&#8221; where huge oak trees and gardens divided traffic and lively businesses and shops lined the street.<\/p>\n<p>&bull; <a href=\"http:\/\/globespotters.blogs.nytimes.com\/2009\/07\/20\/the-beach-life-where-you-might-least-expect-it\/\">Prague now boasts a beach of its own right in the centre of the city<\/a>.\u00a0 Copying earlier projects in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/08\/01\/world\/europe\/01france.html\">Paris<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/globespotters.blogs.nytimes.com\/2008\/08\/07\/in-berlin-a-river-runs-through-it\/\">Berlin<\/a>, beachgoers in Prague can play volleyball and badminton with the towering spires of St. Peter and St. Paul in the background.<\/p>\n<p><em>Photo by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/inkiboo\/\">Gerard McGovern<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Each week we will be focusing on blogs from around the world dealing specifically with urban environments.
