{"id":595,"date":"2006-03-06T12:35:40","date_gmt":"2006-03-06T16:35:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingtoronto.ca\/?p=595"},"modified":"2006-03-06T12:35:40","modified_gmt":"2006-03-06T16:35:40","slug":"hamilton-raises-the-hammer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2006\/03\/06\/hamilton-raises-the-hammer\/","title":{"rendered":"Hamilton Raises the Hammer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisethehammer.org\/images\/2005_downtown_residential_loan_program_projects_sm.jpg\" alt=\"ham\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In 2004 a group of citizens in Hamilton started an online magazine called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.raisethehammer.org\">Raise The Hammer<\/a> &#8220;dedicated to providing a variety of views and approaches to the goal of making Hamilton a great city.&#8221; The current lead article is celebrating 14 new projects in the city centre.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Hamilton&#8217;s future does not lie in paving over farmland on the outskirts of town. Our future starts at King and James and spreads out from there. Only with a healthy heart can the rest of the body function efficiently and properly.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Hamilton is and was a good city &#8212; when I spent a few days downtown in 1998 (for the first time) I was surprised at how &#8220;big-city&#8221; and urban it felt. I was expecting a slightly bigger version of Windsor, where the suburbs (or at least a suburban sentiment) seems to start right downtown. And the city has such a great natural location, with it&#8217;s very own mountain (though there is talk on Reading Toronto to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.readingt.readingcities.com\/index.php\/toronto\/mountain_building\/\">build our own mountain<\/a>).
