“<\/span>Moore is the<\/span> author of <\/span>Now Playing: Early Moviegoing and the Regulation of Fun, a\u00a0definitive study of Toronto cinemas and the emerging mass audience. With\u00a0the\u00a0help of anecdotes and archival photos, Moore will reveal the history of\u00a0local theatre chains, architects and explain how neighbourhood cinemas\u00a0played a vital role in the city’s urban development.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Following the lecture will be a screening of the National Film Board’s\u00a0seldom-seen documentary, <\/span>Dreamland: A History of Early Canadian Movies.\u00a0Dreamland highlights the efforts of Canadian filmmakers prior to the\u00a0creation of the National Film Board. It also features images of early\u00a0Toronto cinemas, footage from the Great Toronto Fire of 1904, as well as\u00a0interviews with theatre impresarios such as Nat Taylor, the founder of 20th\u00a0Century Theatres and Cineplex Odeon.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Regrettably, most of the city’s old cinemas have disappeared. This lecture\u00a0—\u00a0let’s just call it an afternoon at the movies — aims to pay them tribute,\u00a0so\u00a0what better place to marvel at the nostalgia at hand than at the Revue, the\u00a0city’s oldest surviving cinema!”<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n
