{"id":609,"date":"2006-03-09T09:26:58","date_gmt":"2006-03-09T13:26:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingtoronto.ca\/?p=609"},"modified":"2007-03-05T18:45:40","modified_gmt":"2007-03-05T22:45:40","slug":"ducharme-to-province-fix-my-system-first-then-talk-subways","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2006\/03\/09\/ducharme-to-province-fix-my-system-first-then-talk-subways\/","title":{"rendered":"Ducharme to Province: Fix My System First, Then Talk Subways"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"right\" src=\"http:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/ttc\/coupler\/1199\/duch.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not that Rick Ducharme doesn&#8217;t appreciate the money that may have been promised to extend the Spadina subway to York University, it&#8217;s that the TTC has other needs that need attention first. <a href=\"http:\/\/news.google.ca\/news?hl=en&#038;q=TTC%20chief%20has%20right%20idea%20about%20transit%20priorities&#038;btnG=Google+Search&#038;sa=N&#038;tab=wn\">John Barber<\/a> talks to the TTC Chairman and compliments him on his prudent approach to managing the TTC&#8217;s priorities.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The top priority is state-of-good-repair,&#8221; he said yesterday, repeating a phrase that has become a mantra at the TTC ever since a worn-out signalling system killed three people on the Spadina line 10 years ago. &#8220;Over the next four or five years I need about $700-million a year . . . and it&#8217;s not negotiable.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>After that, Ducharme wants $200 million per year to purchase more streetcars and buses to reduce the amount of time people across this city have to wait at a stop before a vehicle arrives. Then we can talk about subway expansion.<\/p>\n<p>The province has not commented on Ducharme&#8217;s statements.
