This year, there are 84 walks to choose from, as well as film screenings, yoga sessions and even a trip down the Rouge River. After two long years of pandemic uncertainty, the walks are back in person, although there are a few digital tours online for those unable to venture out.<\/p>\n<p>This year Jane\u2019s Walk is partnering up with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.provocation.ca\/\">Provocation Ideas Festival<\/a>, a new series of events in Toronto that \u201caspires to create a new public square of spirited discussion that is rooted in local communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re bringing people together to exchange ideas,\u201d says Kate Fane, Communications Director for Provocation. There\u2019s plenty to discuss: \u201caffordable housing, the climate crisis, anti-black racism. As a resident of the neighbourhood, Cohoon explains that there was a lot of public art installed for the PanAm Games. \u201cAs a fan of public art, I do enjoy the pieces but they\u2019re just not very accessible,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>In some places, sculptures or installations can emerge from the ground unexpectedly, creating hazards for the visually impaired. Sometimes the signage explaining the installations is embedded into the ground, explains Cohoon, making it difficult to see for people in wheelchairs (Cohoon himself relies on a wheelchair to get around). Visitors, whether they\u2019re disabled or not, also need to rest during their walks, but there is a dearth of benches and shade in the area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe art is supposed to fall under the AODA standards,\u201d says Cohoon, referring to the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, \u201cbut it often falls short.\u201d It\u2019s up to activists like Cohoon to bring people\u2019s attention to the shortcomings. \u201cWe\u2019re always looking for creative ways to talk about disabilities and public access,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<h2>Lawrence Heights: A Community in Between<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Hear from Kumsa Baker and Lawrence Height residents as they discuss their vision for the redevelopment of the neighbourhood in a panel discussion streamed on Zoom, Saturday May 7 at 11 AM. Register <a href=\"https:\/\/www.janeswalkfestivalto.com\/panels\">here<\/a>. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Join residents of Lawrence Heights for a walk around the neighbourhood beginning at the Lawrence Heights Community Centre, Saturday May 7 at 3 PM. Register <a href=\"https:\/\/www.communitybenefits.ca\/janes_walk_panel_discussion\">here<\/a>. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the years to come, the public housing in Lawrence Heights will be demolished and new structures will be built. \u201cSometimes in this process they leave the community out\u201d says Kumsa Baker, the Director of Community Benefits Campaigns for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.communitybenefits.ca\/\">Toronto Community Benefits Network<\/a> (TCBN), \u201cwe\u2019re here to make sure that doesn\u2019t happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The TCBN is a coalition of labour organizations and community groups that ensure that tangible benefits to the community are included in any construction contracts that are signed between developers and Toronto Community Housing (TCHC). \u201cThis could include employment in construction or trades, training programs, or scholarships,\u201d says Baker. Working with local community groups helps \u201cidentify what community benefits are most useful,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>In Lawrence Heights, TCBN has partnered with local community hub <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nych.ca\/\">North York Community House<\/a> (NYCH) to form the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lhrevitecoalition.com\/\">Lawrence Heights Revitalization Coalition<\/a>. \u201cThey have a close relationship with a lot of the tenants,\u201d Baker says of NYCH, \u201cand we\u2019re trying to identify what community benefits would be most useful.\u201d So far they\u2019ve identified a list of priorities including a commitment to \u201czero displacement\u201d from any developers, meant to slow the process of gentrification and ensure residents have continued access to affordable housing.<\/p>\n<p><em>Photos Courtesy of Jane&#8217;s Walk Festival Toronto.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Urban activist Jane Jacobs\u2019 birthday is this week (May 4) and many Torontonians will be celebrating by attending the Jane\u2019s Walk Festival this weekend.
