{"id":67136,"date":"2023-05-16T09:03:27","date_gmt":"2023-05-16T13:03:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/?p=67136"},"modified":"2023-05-16T09:03:27","modified_gmt":"2023-05-16T13:03:27","slug":"the-promises-and-perils-of-ai-at-the-provocation-ideas-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2023\/05\/16\/the-promises-and-perils-of-ai-at-the-provocation-ideas-festival\/","title":{"rendered":"The promises and perils of AI at the Provocation Ideas Festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This weekend sees the launch of more events from the fine folk at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.provocation.ca\/2023-events-toronto\">Provocation Ideas Festival<\/a>. \u201cOur mission is to be a new public square of civic engagement,\u201d says Founding Director Mark Rosenfeld. \u201cWe have hard conversations that confront difficult truths and we envision more hopeful futures,\u201d he says. \u201cTo do so, we need to create programming spaces where community members can meaningfully engage, free of financial, physical and other barriers.\u201d As such, all the events are free although some require registration before-hand.<\/p>\n<p>Art shows, performances, lectures, and debates, held in public spaces around the city, are oriented towards this year\u2019s theme of artificial intelligence. In and around Innis College at the University of Toronto there will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.provocation.ca\/ai-art-gallery\">AI-generated art<\/a> on display, plus a number of panels devoted to debating the impact of AI on society. \u201cThe AI art exhibit documents this watershed moment in the transformation of art by AI,\u201d says Rosenfeld. \u201cAmid the awe and unease incited by these rapid changes, the exhibition serves as a space to contemplate coexistence with new forms of AI.\u201d Later this month and into June, the AI art exhibit will also be hosted at York University, at various branches of the Toronto Public Library, and at the Inter\/Access art gallery as part of Doors Open Toronto.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_67137\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67137\" style=\"width: 269px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-67137 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/Screen-Shot-2023-05-15-at-9.37.06-AM-269x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"269\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/Screen-Shot-2023-05-15-at-9.37.06-AM-269x300.png 269w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/Screen-Shot-2023-05-15-at-9.37.06-AM-600x670.png 600w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/Screen-Shot-2023-05-15-at-9.37.06-AM-768x857.png 768w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/Screen-Shot-2023-05-15-at-9.37.06-AM-842x940.png 842w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/Screen-Shot-2023-05-15-at-9.37.06-AM.png 982w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 269px) 100vw, 269px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-67137\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nikola Steer, designer of DanceGPT<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One of the other events this weekend at Innis is an interactive dance exhibition cheekily titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.ca\/e\/the-provocateuse-is-present-dancegpt-tickets-624923181057\">DanceGPT<\/a>. Visitors will encounter a series of interactive stations with different \u2018prompts\u2019 designed to elicit reactions. At the end of the night, dancer and curator Nikola Steer will collect the responses and interpret them with an improvised dance. \u201cI have no idea how it will look,\u201d she tells me with a grin, \u201cbut it\u2019s meant to be playful. Play is a practice that helps people open; it helps the armour come down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Just as with ChatGPT, when users interact with an interface, they \u201cexpect something in return,\u201d says Steer. But the canned nature of interaction through a screen is something that has limited appeal, especially after three years of pandemic isolation. \u201cMy interest is in \u2018rehumaning\u2019 other humans,\u201d she says. \u201cThe pandemic was awful for our mental health. I see this as a real opportunity to start to stitch ourselves back together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We talk about the possibilities, both harmful and helpful, of using a tool like ChatGPT in arts work. This year, those stories will revolve around technology. \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2022\/05\/05\/this-weekend-janes-walk-festival-provocation-ideas-festival\/\">Last year<\/a> I remember a story that really stood out for me,\u201d he says. \u201cA young first-generation Canadian women spoke of her stuggles in both resisting and coming to terms with the cultural and language traditions of her family. For me at least, there was a universal dimension to what she described.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Provocation Ideas Festival doesn\u2019t shy away from contentious topics: artificial intelligence, \u2018woke\u2019 culture, healthcare, gentrification, policing\u2026.
