{"id":70475,"date":"2025-06-20T07:15:33","date_gmt":"2025-06-20T11:15:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/?p=70475"},"modified":"2025-06-19T10:21:26","modified_gmt":"2025-06-19T14:21:26","slug":"making-torontos-parks-more-accessible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2025\/06\/20\/making-torontos-parks-more-accessible\/","title":{"rendered":"Making Toronto\u2019s parks more accessible"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow dropped in on the annual conference of <a href=\"https:\/\/parkpeople.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Park People<\/a>, a national non-profit that advocates for urban parks, to make a welcome announcement just days before the official start of summer.<\/p>\n<p>The mayor announced that starting on Friday, June 20, 2025, the City of Toronto will no longer charge a fee to individuals, registered charities and community groups who want to hold a community event in a public park for 100 people or less if there is no fee to join the activity. Examples include: ravine walks, birdwatching and other events that involve learning about nature; family fun days; tai chi, meditation and other wellness activities;\u00a0 community picnics, and learning events involving sharing Indigenous knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToronto\u2019s parks are where neighbours meet. Many of Toronto\u2019s parks are situated on the sites of pre-European-contact Indigenous settlements.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On June 20, the City of Toronto <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/services-payments\/venues-facilities-bookings\/booking-park-recreation-facilities\/simple-permit-booking\/\">parks permits web page<\/a> will be updated to include detailed booking guidelines and an application form. Toronto Parks and Recreation is holding virtual information sessions on how to apply for a no-fee park permit on June 24 and June 26, 2025. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/ca.mar.medallia.com\/?e=452654&amp;d=l&amp;h=34A9DFBEBFE3F4A&amp;l=en\">register here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The no-fee permit program will launch on June 20 and remain open for activities in Toronto\u2019s 1,500 parks until the end of October 2025. City staff will then evaluate the program to identify opportunities for future improvements.
