Bikeshare sent us a press release about many of their bikes being vandelized lately. I suppose it’s one of those things that makes you wonder about what society is coming to, like people who voted for Margaret Thatcher did:<\/p>\n

In the last month, 25 BikeShare bikes around downtown Toronto have been<\/em> vandalized. Tires are being deliberately punctured, requiring hundreds of <\/em>dollars in parts and labour. <\/em><\/p>\n

The attacks are a serious blow to the viability of BikeShare, a <\/em>not-for-profit community project of the Community Bicycle Network. <\/em><\/p>\n

The vandalism began last winter at our Grassroots – Riverdale hub where <\/em>six bikes were targeted. Since April 2006, the tires of bikes at hubs <\/em>around the city have been punctured, including those at The Bike Joint, <\/em>Jet Fuel and Mountain Equipment Co-op. The same instrument appears to be <\/em>used in all cases. <\/em><\/p>\n

Project Manager Maogosha Pyjor states, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153This vandalism undermines a valued <\/em>community service that is already struggling financially.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/em><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153This threatens to shut down several key BikeShare hub locations because <\/em>they are unable to bring the bikes in overnight. The vandalism is <\/em>probably happening when the hubs are closed,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Pyjor adds. <\/em><\/p>\n

BikeShare is requesting the assistance of the general public to be on the <\/em>lookout, especially around hub locations. A list of hubs can be found at <\/em>www.bikeshare.org. <\/em><\/p>\n

Since 2001, BikeShare’s fleet of bright yellow bicycles has been a welcome <\/em>addition to the streets of downtown Toronto. BikeShare provides people <\/em>with a healthy, affordable, convenient and efficient way to travel. <\/em><\/p>\n

BikeShare, a project of the Community Bicycle Network, is Canada’s largest <\/em>and most comprehensive bicycle sharing project. It recently won a Green <\/em>Toronto award from the City of Toronto in its Community Projects category. <\/em><\/p>\n
